Clothes, feeding equipment etc needed for Iraqi children - can you help?
My dh is currently serving with the British Army in Basrah in Iraq and would like to help some of the local children and families. Years of war (Iran/Iraq, Gulf wars 1 and 2), sanctions and Saddam's regime have left very poor living conditions with sporadic electricity, no sewage system (meaning that the canals and rivers are open sewers) and no system of organised refuse collection (even medical waste is dumped). Child survival rates are not great and cholera and TB are becoming quite commonplace. He has asked the families of the soldiers serving with the Coldstream Guards to collect various items which will be given to orphanages, children's homes, nurseries, and hospitals and I wondered whether anyone on MN might like to help. He has asked for:
? Children?s summer clothes and shoes, especially sandals (0-10 yrs)
? Babygrows and baby blankets
? Changing mats
? Feeding bottles, bowls, bibs, sterilisers.
? Re-useable nappies
? Dummies (new)
? Breast pumps, plastic nipple guards.
? Nappy cream
A container will be going to Iraq from Aldershot at the end of July. I would be happy to collect anything from either the Chichester or Camberley area but otherwise I'm afraid you'd have to post it to me. I know there are a million deserving causes out there, and I appreciate your patience in reading this far! Thanks so much
