Baby struggling with holding head up still at 12 weeks

Hi!

so my girl is 12 weeks old and has always hated tummy time so I didn’t push it until I went to a baby group and saw 3 month olds sitting up really well and it’s worried me.

she can hold her head up in tummy time sometimes briefly but often flops it down. Has anyone experienced this? Shes doing everything else normally, kicking legs bringing hands to mouth etc.

she had some feeding issues early on and struggled to gain weight. I’m wondering if this has had an effect. When I sit her on my knee she holds head up and looks around but it still flops back

She's fine. Lot's of babies don't like tummy time, and it's a relatively new concept, I'd just do it on your chest, at that age it's just as good.

I don't think any 3 mo will be sitting up though tbh.

@MaJoady thank you. I mean they were holding them on their laps supported but they had their head upright unaided, my first did this at this age so just wondering 😕

Has your baby started lifting their head now? Im in a similar position with my 12 week old baby and I am so worried

Cocomandarin · 14/05/2026 13:23

@BabyGJM yes! She has just learnt to roll and almost there with sitting unaided at 7 months in a few days. Shes been a little slower than what’s average with things but getting there. Tummy time helped I think, I just done it once a day and stopped when she cried but even a couple of minutes helped build the strength quick

I thought it was 4 months for independent head control? Not worth worrying at this stage I’d say (but I’m not a clinician!)

Starting to sit unaided at 7mos sounds fine. Often larger babies take longer with body control b/c there's more to control IYSWIM.
Also, PFBs do not have role models - DD2 did everything sooner and I'm convinced it's because she was watching DD1.
Many babies do not enjoy tummy time.

Babies don’t come with an inbuilt timer. Some do things earlier, some do them later. My friends little girl recited nursery rhymes at 12 months, but didn’t pull her self up to standing until she was nearly 17 months. Mine walked at 11 months but was only saying single words at 14 months.

As long as your baby is showing steady developmental progress then she is probably well within the very wide range of normal developmental goals. Just enjoy watching her grow and learn new skills. Keep a record and every so often look back and you will be amazed at how far and how quickly she has progressed.
