Freaking out - think I might have put an extra scoop of formula in by mistake

DS is on a thickened anti reflux formula already and we are switching between 6 and 7 oz feeds on a couple at the moment
I cannot for the life of me think now because I've questioned myself and I am so tired but I think his last bottle may have had 6oz of water and 7 scoops
Will this do him any damage?
I feel terrible and am so worried especially since it's already a thickened formula
He didn't have any trouble getting it out of the teat but it's a variflow one so not sure he would...
Help!

I'm no expert but I'd say babies are quite resilient! Don't do it in general but as a one off I can't see how it could cause any problems.

Dk20 · 26/04/2020 19:32

I really wouldn't worry.
Last year one very sleepy night ds drank one (of many) night time bottles really really fast. I was surprised thinking he must have been starving.
Then I realised, instead of putting 4 scoops of milk into 4 of water, I put 4 scoops into 2oz of milk left over from his last bottle Blush and that's what he drank. So basically 6 scoops of milk in 2oz of old water.
I massively panicked but doctor Google told me it would just give him a sick tummy, luckily he didn't even get that.

A one off extra scoop will not do harm. It would only be an issue if you did it all the time

DurhamDurham · 26/04/2020 19:37

Don't worry at all, it's just not recommended to do it regularly, baby will be absolutely fine Smile

bloodywhitecat · 26/04/2020 19:38

It's only a problem if every bottle is made that way, to be honest I think most of us have probably done something daft when making up formula at some point, I know I have put 7 scoops into 6oz before now and it's been fine.

Purplequalitystreet · 26/04/2020 19:45

Don't worry. When you're exhausted it's very easy to lose count!

He'll be fine. I know how it feels though. I remember accidentally giving DS milk that was hours old and completely freaking out. He was fine.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 26/04/2020 20:14

Nope! He'll be absolutely fine, one extra scoop isn't going to hurt once! I used to use those little formula pots to measure out 4 or 5 lots because apparently counting to 7 was too much to ask of me Grin

notthemum · 26/04/2020 20:18

Bless you. Former childminder here. Will be fine. Don't make a habit of it. Give yourself a break. As a pp said babies are really quite resistant. 💐

9caratyellowgold · 26/04/2020 20:20

Nothing to worry about, unless he's prone to constipation, it might make him more constipated than usual. I did the opposite once, put too little in, and discovered a great cure for constipation Grin

Thank you so so much
PFB as you can probably tell and it’s been a bit of a rough weekend followed by feeling a bit low due to lockdown etc and that was the final straw
You’ve all made me feel so much better

Sorry to hear that, hope your week is better Flowers

Marphise · 26/04/2020 20:44

Good lord don't worry about that.

Usually it's recommanded to get the right amount of formula because it matches the amount of nutrients and calories he'd get from breastmilk. If you put too much formula all the time he'd get more calories than he needs, and if you put less he'd not get enough.

But as a one off it won't do anything ! I think we've all done this at least once in a sleep-deprived haze.

bloodywhitecat · 26/04/2020 20:47

I can safely say, as the mum of two adults, a nursery nurse and a foster parent, there will be plenty more blips along the way. We are human and these things happen, all you can do is cut yourself a bit of slack Flowers.

GloriousGoldfish · 02/04/2026 03:36

So glad to stumble across this at 03:32 this morning after feeding my 12 week old 5 scoops in 4oz water and only notice when I thought he’d drank it far more quickly than usual! 🙈
