Please help! FTM and newborn in pain

Hi everyone, I just gave birth to my first baby three weeks ago and desperately need some advice. Baby has been very unsettled in past week, crying even when he has been bathed, fed, changed, etc. He’s very gassy and screams when he has to poop or pass wind and arches his back. He also started to burp and spit up milk more often. It’s interfering with his sleep and he’s exhausted but nothing I do seems to take away the pain. I noticed he has some blister-like scans in his anus and I wondered if this is the reason he is in pain and if so what should I do? Just feel at a loss as no family around and also very little medical support atm due to Coronavirus.

Please can more experienced mummies tell me what to do and is this anything serious? Baby is feeding fine and doesn’t have a fever or any other rashes, besides the sores in anus. Is this nappy rash? How do I treat it? Is it normal?

Many thanks in advance for your help!

Glad you've managed to speak to a dr. My ebf baby is very sicky, I think because I have a decent supply and she's very greedy. The difference is she's never seemed in pain with it, only a handful of times at night when she's had bad wind. I would as pp said cut out dairy but give it chance to work. Other options would be to try infacol as it is a bit of a myth that breastfed babies don't have wind.

Thanks so much @myfav! My baby is ebf as well and he definitely has wind. I am going to try infacol as well if colic symptoms persist after the thrush has cleared up. Giving up dairy will be hard for me as I'm vegetarian and its my main source of protein, but I'll definitely give it a try if nothing else works!

Sudocream - magically heals everything!

Have you tried different feeding positions yet? DD3 would feed in the 'normal' position and fall asleep but then when I'd move her into the Moses basket it would trigger her to start being sick. I then started feeding her whilst we were both lying down and it made such a difference, I think this is one of the biggest benefits of a next to me. I think that position stops the milk coming out too fast for them. It's still such early days and it's okay to have a little cry.

@sadtoday21 sorry just seen your thread. Glad to read your update that you managed to get the GP to diagnose the condition. Many local communities now have a prescription drop off/, delivery service - it's worth you calling your local pharmacy to find out if they offer that service during this crazy period x

@sadtoday21 how are you getting in with getting the prescriptions? I'm hoping things improve for you soon.

sadtoday21 · 04/04/2020 06:11

Thanks @HidingUnderMyDuvet really appreciate you checking up on me! I think it’s too early for the medicines to kick in, go said wait two weeks to see if it clears. So far tongue is still white and he still seems in pain, but the nappy rash is settling down a bit. I noticed on the packaging of the oral gel it says don’t give to babies under four months, but I read online gps do often prescribe it off label for newborns with thrush? I’m quite sure she new he was only a month old when she prescribed it, but just worries me a tiny bit. How are you doing? Hope all is well! X

Great to hear from you @InDreamland, I miss you guys from the penguin huddle! Hope Bubsy is flourishing! I tried to join you all on fb but I decided I really don’t like fb (I have concerns about privacy issues and they way they collect user data), so unfortunately not on there anymore. Give my best to the group! Incredible bunch of strong ladies on there ❤️

@sadtoday21 Bubsy currently feeding but she keeps falling asleep on my boob. Sorry you decided not to do the FB group, could you set up a profile not using your real name? One of our group has done that. Glad you got your meds, hope they kick in soon. Other than that I hope you're enjoying your rainbow as much as I am. They're so precious x
