Vote for £20 payment to encourage reporting of benefit fraud

The government are asking the public to come up with ideas to save money on a new spending challenge website.
My idea is to offer the public £20 to report benefit fraud. I think most people could name at least 2-3 benefit cheats. Some could name many more! I'm sure £20 would be enough.

The amount of money given would need to be enough to encourage people to give the details. Enough details would need to be given to for the case to end in prosecution. There would need to be no risk of the benefit cheat finding out who reported them.

This could save the country thousands!

Please vote for this idea!

nope - know quite a few on benefits and I can't name a single one that is cheating.

There is one that I thought (for a short while) was - but realised in time they weren't.

Nice to see the Stasi is alive and kicking. This doesn't work on so many levels. Bribing people to shop their neighbours would result in an exponential increase in reports and the 'thousands saved' would end up being spent on extra officials to chase down all the leads. If the behaviour of a neighbour really offends, a decent person shouldn't need a financial reward to do the right thing.

stupid idea

Sure and we'll include tax fraud too. Everyone who pays for work in cash for a start. That should be very nearly everybody.

Want a tax audit?

Want one every week

it could be YOU.

Oh and I loved "There would need to be no risk of the benefit cheat finding out who reported them."

Why? Wouldn't you have the courage to face those you accuse.

That is a shocking idea if I ever heard one!!!

I am sure that you will find quite a few people ready to drop pretty much anyone in it for £20 regardless of wether they are benefit fraudsters or not.

Wrong, wrong, wrong!
