Politics, I couldn't care less! What's happened to my country?

I've just come back from living in Italy, where I resided for 10 years. I now come back to a country that I don't recognise, all the people in London appear to be foreign. I would now need an interpreter that spoke 30 languages just to ask the way along Oxford Street. I'd heard you had an 'open door policy' on immigration, but this is ridiculous, I got on the bus, the only person who spoke English was a lady with her nose in a book, trying to look inconspicuous. My freind said that it is the fault of all those "liberal lefties" she says they hate Britain, and wanted to change it's cultural map, is this right? What is the policy here? My freind said I would get a warm reception on MN as they are very intelligent/articulate and caring individuals......

Hello!

Welcome newbie!

Your friend is right. About 9 years ago, letters were delivered to all members of the liberal lefty club asking them to attend a meeting in Hyde Park. There we were told to start smuggling foreign people of all persuasions into the country in our bags, whenever we came back from holiday.

Did she tell you about the actual, open door at Dover? It's not just a metaphor, it really is a door, and we wedged it open by putting a beanie baby under the bottom.

I'm so sad you don't like it (your country) any more. The thing is, foreign language learning has gone down in schools, and we thought this would be a cunning way to increase everyone's language skill, painlessly. And we thought food might improve.

Can't believe your friend didn't tell you about the meeting. Tsk!

thought so...

All those foreigners you met in London were probably here liberally spending their Euros and Dollars, taking advantage of the weak £. We could do with a few more of them.

sethstarkaddersmum · 13/05/2010 17:29

be fair Animula, food actually has improved. You can even get De Cecco pasta in Sainsburys now.

'I now come back to a country that I don't recognise, all the people in London appear to be foreign. '

Sort of like you were when you were living in Italy, able to do so thanks to the UK@s being in the EU.

But there is good news!

As EU members, you're perfectly free to go back to Italy (or anywhere else in the EU) if you don't like your country anymore.

Trip trap.

cyteen · 13/05/2010 17:32

fuck off twatbags

some good old-fashioned Anglo-Saxon for you there

bibbitybobbityhat · 13/05/2010 17:33

Roffle!

salizchap · 13/05/2010 17:43

OH fgs! How many immigrants do you actually KNOW mycounty?

FYI I was married to a non-EU person in Spain. I live there a while with him. I met a lot of Expats out there who didn't even bother trying to learn Spanish, and hung out in Irish pubs run exclusively by Brits and Irish, and who ate just british food, and bumped up house prices so high that most local young people can never again afford to get a mortgage.

It works both ways!

And also FYI, when my then DH and father of my DS applied for a visa to come with us to the UK we had to jump through hoops, and borrow large amounts of money. In the end we decided to stay out there. Later our marriage failed sadly, and I had to return to the UK with our DS, who now hasn't seen his DF in 3 years.

Why? Because HIS DF CAN'T GET A VISA!

Don't go on about what you have no idea about.

sethstarkaddersmum · 13/05/2010 17:48

come on people, it's a wind-up.

cyteen · 13/05/2010 17:49

Any excuse to use the word 'twatbags'

ooojimaflip · 13/05/2010 17:52

twatbags.

Aye's it's a good one.

Pergola.

That's another good one.

seeker · 13/05/2010 17:58

AND there's something nasty in the woodshed. I saw it.

claig · 13/05/2010 19:57

"My friend said I would get a warm reception on MN as they are very intelligent/articulate and caring individuals"

that's the real give-away line. Her friend obviously knows nothing about MN.

complimentary · 13/05/2010 19:59

Cyteen. How very much dare you use the word 'twatbags' to describe the other posters here on MN, should you not be using the term 'twatbag' to describe the OP?

complimentary · 13/05/2010 20:04

Salicahp. Don't you just love the Costa del Crime?, or did you live in another part of that great country. DH says a lot of money can be made out there.
