Hurrah.

weblette · 12/05/2010 18:51

They're going to rip up swathes of Buckinghamshire and instead for HS2. Oh joy.

weblette · 12/05/2010 18:52

Don't get me wrong, I'm delighted the third runway idea has been scrapped, I'm just not thrilled by what their alternative is.

strandedatsea · 12/05/2010 18:54

(total ignorance) what is HS2?

weblette · 12/05/2010 18:56

High Speed 2 - the proposed rail ink between London and Birmingham. More info here

toccatanfudge · 12/05/2010 18:56

\link{http://www.hs2.org.uk\HS2) high speed rail link to the West Midlands.

personally I'd prefer they did that so better public transport links that tear peoples homes down and increase air pollution

and it's better than digging up the countryside for more roads, or more carriage ways on roads (imo).

yes now all they have to do is somehow make train prices more affordable then people might chose it over flying!

toccatanfudge · 12/05/2010 19:14

ahhh now you see you need to have a child and travel with them - the savings on the family and friends rail cards are FABULOUS.

£120 return for me and my 3DS's to Edinburgh and back on the train (from Northamptonshire)

You won't find a flight as cheap as that

(the coach is cheaper but it takes 10hrs.........I've done it once with dS3 only 8 months at the time.........not doing it again with him as a 3yr old LOL)

i'd prefer another runway for Gatwick. Heathrow is a nightmare as it is.

i think more international flights running from the smaller airports would be great.

i also think more train lines need to be built, though of course that would be a planning nightmare too...

it always annoys me when they justify fuel tax increases by saying 'we want people to use public transport' but more people are aleady using pbulic transport (trains have highest usage since 1950's!)- more capacity is needed, not just charging people more (for both rail and road travel)
