As in the 12.5 hours my DS gets a week? Is it true they will cut this?

Katy, everyone is taxed on their earnings. Everyone is taxed on what they spend.

Tax on savings, however, isn't strictly true. On pension savings you actually get tax relief. On most other types of savings you get taxed only on the growth, not on the capital you're saving. Even then, there are ways around paying that tax, using the capital gains tax allowance doesn't require a particularly clever accountant.

The same with IHT, there are many ways to avoid paying, or using some of those savings to provide an insurance plan to cover the tax.

I don't doubt for one minute that your grandparents were hard working and frugal, most people are.
