Is stating we are overpopulated and immigration needs to be limited truly racist?

Having listened to an argument a conversation this weekend between members of my family about this, I thought I would ask my MN jury.

Hmm, well, being overpopulated is not a solid fact, is it? Where I live there are very few people and our economy and environment could accomodate more quite easily. And immigration is limited, isn't it?

Not really racist... not unless there was one particular category of people (colour, religion, C.O.O) that were singled out for particular disapproval. What you're describing sits somewhere on the spectrum between... 'social concern' (public services, housing, enough jobs to go around etc.) and 'xenophobia' (we hate all outsiders regardless of origin).

A good way to distill the argument is to pick a popular foreigner resident in the UK.. overseas soccer player, film actor, etc... and ask if they are part of the problem & should they be sent packing. If the answer is 'yes' then you'd suspect xenophobia. If it's 'no' then you're probably looking at selective racism and just arguing about numbers
