How can I stop a relative sending political WhatsApp messages?

There are so many messages I’d like to send to the relative who spams me several times a day with her latest outrage from the Reform Facebook group. Today it included a Sweaty Betty hijab which Karen thinks is dangerous and should be banned. And unnecessary because Muslims don’t go to the gym, FFS!!! All the messages are sweary and shouty. And there are loads of exclamation marks!!! What on earth is happening to our country!!! FFS!!! And loads of pictures of folk in small boats.

How do I negotiate this? I’ve tried ignoring them. Still they come. I’ve politely asked to be dropped from the distribution list. But still they come. I fantasise about telling her to fuck off but she’s a family member and it would just cause a lot of drama. And occasionally among the political guff there’s a message about a family thing. But not very often.

How do I stop this intrusion? At the moment her messages go to locked hidden chats on WhatsApp. I just look at the messages once a week and mass delete. But I don’t enjoy seeing them. They ruin my day amd make me feel stressed (I’m not usually such a snowflake). It’s annoying me that I don’t really know how to deal with this. I’d be very grateful for some help.

Mute her? Do you have other relatives that can keep you informed about family things?

Happyd · 07/09/2026 00:22

The mute button is your friend for things like this

Negroany · 07/09/2026 00:25

"Karen, stop sending me this crap or I'll need to delete your number and take myself out of the group".

I had similar a while ago, said something a bit like that, and thankfully they were so upset they removed themselves!

Makepumpseleven · 07/09/2026 00:28

One last firm warning and then use your boundaries, woman!

Relative, I don’t agree with the political things you keep sending. I have asked you before to stop but you keep sending them. Please respect my wishes and stop sending them, or else I will have to stop having text contact with you and that would be a real shame for our family dynamics.

FlapperFlamingo · 07/09/2026 00:49

Just leave the group. If you get asked why and you don’t want to say just reply “I was in too many groups and I had to prioritise other things as I’m really busy at the moment “

AssassinsEyebrow · 07/09/2026 01:51

Block her

No, say, ‘’I left because your incessant propaganda and terminal outrage drove me up the wall, Karen.’’ Who cares what she thinks? She’s annoying and she needs telling. If she gets upset, she gets upset.

rathersleepy · 07/09/2026 03:43

I don’t think she’s in a group with this relative. She just spams her with post from a Facebook group. Quite easy to mute or block someone.

Dandeloosha · 07/09/2026 03:48

Just block her.

whatsthepointffs · 07/09/2026 04:02

Just ignore.

Dont engage. You won’t ever stop the ranting.

AlphaApple · 07/09/2026 04:39

Mute. You can skim once a week or so to catch up on family news.

TruffleSlinky · 07/09/2026 04:43

Please stop using "Karen" as an insult in this way. It's really awful for people who are actually called Karen.

Do you often use this insult?

Error404FucksNotFound · 07/09/2026 06:04

You won't change them so if you are too scared to block them then either mute them or just ignore them.

PassTheCranberrySauce · 07/09/2026 06:31

Tell her that if she hadn’t voted for Brexit, we’d still have the Dublin treaty, and the boats would be France’s lookout.

Maisymouse2 · 07/09/2026 06:33

Please stop sending me your politcial messages.
If they don't then block.

JimBobsWife · 07/09/2026 06:36

OP, by using the misogynist slur ‘Karen’, you’re just as bad as your relative. You just don’t know it.

Good lord. This again?

concertinacornflake · 07/09/2026 06:38

If they are sending direct to you rather than in a group, tell them to stop or you will block them.

Yes. The UK and France were subject to stricter rules on secondary movements under the Dublin Treaty. Post-Brexit, it’s our problem.

Apart from the rather unpleasant misogyny this is what I'd send.

This is a disingenuous argument. The numbers returned under the Dublin agreement were tiny, often not in our favour. Immigrants were arriving illegally long before Brexit. Remember the lorries?

A group of people, many wearing life jackets, are on a small boat off the coast, with two others trying to climb aboard.

A decade of small boat migrants - how did it begin?

A former Dover coastguard, an ex-border security chief and a customs boss recall the first landings.

TerfOnATrain · 07/09/2026 06:43

My DH blocked his own mother on Facebook because she liked and shared crap all the time, he told her he’d done it too and why 😄

IDrinkTeaAllTheTime · 07/09/2026 06:52

Drama or not, I’d need to tell her very firmly to stop. If she didn’t, she’d be told to fuck off and I’d block her. Just because she’s family doesn’t mean you need to put up with her, and anyone else who questioned me would be told the same.

I never understand this pandering to people just because they’re family.

Absolutely this. And on a website for women too.
