Has the Royal Family lost its magic ?

Has the Royal Family changed for the better or worse over the last 20 years?
I’m curious what everyone thinks.
Do you think the Royal Family is still as respected as it once was, or has public opinion changed too much?
Has social media made them seem more relatable, or has it just created more division and scrutiny?
I’d love to hear different perspectives from people who’ve watched the Royal Family evolve over the years.

Luckily we have Kate & William, who are dignified and gorgeous. Anne is a Grand Dame and prince Edward and his wife are hard working and gracious and delightful too.
Harry has lowered the tone hugely and essentially is no longer a royal, just a media failiure. Andrew has become a scandal and a disgrace, and Fergie no longer an eccentric but rather an alarming figure.
so there’s the family successes and the family fails, just like every family that ever existed.
Camilla has proved to a resounding success and Charles is vey widely respected.

I think there was more magic in the days of George V and Queen Mary. They have been going down hill since the abdication crisis.

Kokonimater · 15/07/2026 13:26

Ha ha!!! What magic???

Dontcallmescarface · 15/07/2026 13:27

IMO it can't lose something it never had in the first place.

Desperatelyseekinglazysusan · 15/07/2026 13:32

They should lose their magic because they aren't magic and shouldn't be treated like special beings who are more amazing than ordinary people because they aren't. One of them has an official constitutional role, the rest of them justify the huge sums of money showered on them by doing some charity work. They should behave in a decent manner and should not behave in away that brings the country into disrepute in return for the enormous privilege bestowed on them for no reason at all.

This in spades.

Some people on here to pretend they know them. Oh, William this and Kate that, oh Anne and Charles and Camilla and didn't George look smart.

Queen Mary was the business. That woman knew how to wear jewels! Never knowingly under blinged! 👑

heyjudedontmakeitsad · 15/07/2026 15:14

I certainly think they’re less revered and have been since the queen died.

Younger people are more awake to the issues with having a royal family and are more willing to criticise them

EmpressOfTheThread · 15/07/2026 15:16

It's better than under King John, when he got England excommunicated. Mind you, we got Magna Carta out of it, so not all that bad.

CurlewKate · 15/07/2026 15:22

They’re all awful. It’s just a matter of degree

Gardenandseawitch · 15/07/2026 15:22

I don't think they ever had any magic.

They've always been a soap opera about a wealthy, entitled and dysfunctional family as far as I am concerned...

They are just human beings.

TofuTuesday · 15/07/2026 15:31

It’s gross and perpetuates the unfair class system. I know capitalism means true meritocracy can’t happen because of generational wealth etc but we could start by getting rid of this one family and all the associated lords/ladies/dukes etc.

EmpressOfTheThread · 15/07/2026 15:35

So, not sharing your opinion then, @PhilipWilliam?

WeNeedaDiagram · 15/07/2026 15:38

I’m 53 and not aware of any ‘magic’ in my lifetime. I do think more people than ever are happy to say they are a pointless and undeserving waste of space.

Viviennemary · 15/07/2026 15:38

This lot aren't too bad but I wouldn't call any of them magical - past or present.

persisted · 15/07/2026 15:40

Hang on, are they actually wizards and I never knew? I would be more interested if they were to be honest.

MsAmanda · 15/07/2026 15:43

I think the fact that Camilla Parker Bowles is referred to as the queen illustrates how nonsensical it all is.

I thought they were lizard people!

GoodkneeBadKnee · 15/07/2026 15:50

I've never thought they had any magic. Bunch of freeloaders.
