Duncan Bannatyne WITHDRAWS his support for Andy Burnham

The former Dragons' Den multimillionaire was backing Burnham's campaign for PM, but he says his comments that trans women should use women's toilets, support for self ID and the funding he's given for puberty blockers means he's withdrawing his support.

It's all a bit of a mess to be honest.

What do others think? Is this likely to have much impact in Makerfield, or is it just noise? I’m particularly interested in hearing from anyone in the area.

Last week I decided to throw my support behind @AndyBurnhamGM for leadership of the Labour Party and on to PM. But I cannot do that now that I find out he says Transwomen. IE men. Should be allowed to use the ladies toilets. I can never support anyon...

Good on him.

It might have been easier for the Labour Party if they had put the EHRC's guidelines on following the Law to Parliament, instead of continually kicking the can down the road.

Well done Duncan Bannatyne 👏. Burnham could stand on the Supreme Court viewpoint of equality for every protected group. Instead he chooses to throw women and LGB under a bus. I admire much of what he’s done in Manchester but this policy doesn’t deserve a single vote and I’m delighted to see a man actually standing up for women, children, LGB and safeguarding.

Im encouraged by this, so sick of women not mattering. Respect to Duncan Bannatyne

Shedmistress · 20/05/2026 11:46

Duncan has been very clear on this for years, so well done him for sticking to some very basic principles.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 20/05/2026 12:07

Could Duncan be persuaded to stand? Understands biological reality and has a firm grasp of economics and doesn't suffer fools gladly. An improvement on most of cabinet. (Joking btw)

I don't understand how ANYONE vying for the position of PM can so blatantly fly in the face of the law like this.

How??

It is difficult to understand, isn't it?
My best guess it's they think it will earn them votes. Especially in oh so 'progressive' Manchester (as the current Lorna Young case exposes rather clearly).

Good on Bannatyne!

Bannatyne now supporting Restore

Does anyone pay attention to the people they're supporting before they declare?

I mean maybe that's really his choice but that's quite a change from one side of the political spectrum to the other

ProfessorRedshoeblueshoe · 20/05/2026 16:19

WatermelonSalad - maybe that is what the Labour Party should be reflecting on, why the working class no longer feel supported by them.

Bunnyofhope · 20/05/2026 16:25

There is still time for AB to sort this out. He needs to say his understanding has changed. He's thought again and now sees the error of his ways, is happy to support single sex spaces and will ensure the law is enacted.
FFS Andy I'm pretty sure this is what you actually believe. Stop being such a coward. It's not the Labour activists you need on your side if you are hoping to govern the country.

WildEnergySupplier · 20/05/2026 16:31

And here's a former Labour Party adviser saying today that women are not bothered about this issue and the only ones who are, are too stupid to understand anything and just go along with whatever Nigel Farage tells them to think

That's what I was thinking

Perhaps that's not what he really thinks
