Just been catching up on the news and it's obvious a plot is well underway to oust Starmer and replace him as leader of Labour and the PM of the UK. Starmer has lost the support of his country, party, polls and the media. Should he resign before he's pushed?

Can Keir survive? Inside the plot to bring down the prime minister | Keir Starmer | The Guardian share.google/4yIpECF0M5QMqM9or

What would be the point, this is all just a right wing plot to destroy our democracy. When you have Tommy Robinson and convicted criminal marching his minions into the capital I do wonder about this country.

Its not a right wing plot, it's a plot by Labour MPs to oust Starmer.

Nothing to do with destroying democracy or Tommy Robinson.

There are some very competent people in the Labour party in the commons. Most of them being ignored. Perhaps they want a chance to get things moving.

I do hope they come forward and make themselves visible soon. The current cabinet is in dire need of competence.

The thought of Prime Minister Lammy is pretty terrifying.

Dorb · 14/09/2025 20:01

Finished me yesterday seeing the pics of Starmer watching the match whilst 150,000 protested, coming straight after the absolute mess of Mandelson. He is too weak and somethings going to give.

Agree he's a weak leader to say the least and his communication skills are non existence.

Well yes that is another issue. But my post was specifically about the civil war that's ongoing within the Labour Party and the fast moving movement to get rid of Starmer.

As much as I think Burnham would make a much better leader, I don't see much talent in the Cabinet to support him and turn things around. He would need to find better cabinet performers very soon and tbh I dont see many candidates in the PLP. I can't see the attraction for Burnham of becoming leader when Labour are so low in the polls and performing so poorly.

Well then isn’t it a bit early to be kicking Starmer out. You need to get Burnham elected as an MP first!

I know you maybe don’t technically need to - but in practice I think you would have to.

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 15/09/2025 13:58

Is there a way that Andy Burnham could become PM?
David Cameron was foreign secretary whilst not an MP. Appreciate he was in the Lords at the time and foreign secretary is not PM of course.

I am torn between stability and needing dynamic change sooner rather than later and I think Andy Burnham appears a better communicator than KS.
Communication is essential to get people back on side.

AB also seems to have grit and principles.

I think it's because Burnham is polling high and is popular so they see him as the person to change Labour with the general public. To be honest I've never thought about the cabinet situation, you're right he would possibly need a new cabinet.

The local MP to Burnham has said he would step down to trigger a by election to open the door for Burnham to get in as a MP.

As far as I’m aware, it’s something that is technically possible but wouldn’t happen. You’d have a PM who couldn’t speak in the House of Commons.

Yes that’s what I meant about you can’t kick out Starmer yet. Presumably you need Burnham to be an MP before any leadership race starts (and definitely before it finishes).

It would be a rather awkward by election for Labour. Everyone would know it’s happening so that Burnham can try and become leader, but no one (possibly including Burnham) would be willing to acknowledge that out loud. “Vote for Labour so that we can maybe oust Starmer and maybe you’ll end up with Burnham but really who knows what the membership will do!”

LeonMccogh · 15/09/2025 14:09

I’d vote for AB given the option.

With you now. Yes it all sounds like a mad plan but seemingly that's the way they are thinking.

As much as I can't stand the current government, I just don't see how things can be fixed. The maths just doesn't stack up. Too many taking out and not enough being paid in.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 15/09/2025 14:20

I cant see why labour want kier out tbh

Hes everything they like

Randomly, i caught a minute of loose women today where Janet street porter was praising peter mendolson(apologies for spelling) saying that he loves money and the rich

Like, summing up this labour govt

That's a good point. Say for arguments sake the grand plan works. A by election is called and AB gets in (let's not forget Farage could scoop the seat) so AB gets in then presumably as pp said cabinet would need re shuffling. Then what? How could AB sort everything out?

It's a very risky throw of the dice

That's what puzzles me. But if things are getting leaked right, left and centre and all media are running with the oust, it must be 100 times worse behind the scenes. Actually maybe they want him out because he's not moving fast enough and tanking at the polls.

Janet has a point think a lot of mps etc like the money and perks.

Yes and I think the Tories have shown over the last few years that it is not as simple as just changing leader and hoping that solves any problem. I’m not really a fan of Starmer, although I think he’s basically fine, but I really hate the mindset of just quickly changing leader the second things look a bit dodgy. I said this on another thread, but I remember people calling for Sunak to go just a few months after he was elected leader, and that was just as silly.

Burnham would be broadly the same, and you’d have people angling to get rid of him by next summer.

Badenoch also probably won’t last much longer - couple more defections, or one more senior one, and she’ll be gone. And then Jenrick will be in for about a week before the first person calls on him to quit.

You’d think none of them had jobs to do.
