I’ve just heard he died today. For those unfamiliar with his story, he was a Soviet double agent for Britain during the Cold War. He made a daring escape in the boot of a car driven by British agents when he realised he was under suspicion. I bet Putin would have loved to get him. There’s a fantastic book by Ben Macintyre called The Traitor and The Spy about his life-it reads like a fictional spy thriller. It’s a read which makes you think-especially in the current climate where everything seems to be turning on its head.

Such a great book. Genuine real life derring-do. RIP.

Thatchers favourite spy! His book was read out on Radio 4 a year or two ago. Utterly brilliant.
