Harold Wilson resignation

Moonlightstars · 02/03/2025 17:50

Learnt about apartheid aged about 7.
I couldn't believe that an ambulance for white people would leave a black person to die.

Deedeesharpwhatkindoflady · 02/03/2025 17:50

Power cuts 70s growing up
Blair peach being murdered during an NF march.

MotherOfCatBoy · 02/03/2025 17:51

The power cuts in 1974 due to miner’s strikes and energy crises. I was about 2. I just remember the candles really!

After that, a mixture of John Cole reporting on the Troubles in NI and that lovely lady who challenged Thatcher live on Nationwide about the sinking of the Belgrano.

TobaccoFlower · 02/03/2025 17:51

I remember James Callaghan being PM then the first female PM Margaret Thatcher.

Movinghouseatlast · 02/03/2025 17:54

Michael Foot losing the General Election. Watched it in black and white on the telly in my bedroom.

Miner's strike.

Same for me as my dad was a miner. Not that I really understood it at the time as I was very young, although I knew it was something important.

ProfYaffle · 02/03/2025 17:55

"Labour isn't working" bill boards. I would have been 6. Also Maggie Thatcher Milk Snatcher.

GenerationXer · 02/03/2025 17:55

Being told to be quiet when my Dad was watching President Nixon resign on live tv. I was 6. Also remember Harold Wilson resigning in 1976.

teetotalpinkgindrinker · 02/03/2025 18:01

Power cuts in 1977 - just started my first job and often went home early due to scheduled cuts.

I was 17 and prior to that had absolutely no interest in any politics.

ginasevern · 02/03/2025 18:01

JFK being assassinated in 1963 and the following year Malta gaining independence.

maudelovesharold · 02/03/2025 18:02

My Mum taking me to see Harold Wilson speak at a Labour Party rally in Brighton Dome when I was about 6! I still remember the hugely enthusiastic audience clapping and cheering. Don’t know what the occasion was or the exact year. Must have been a party conference or pre-election rally? Neither parent was a party member, but both were staunch Labour supporters!

Allatonce2024 · 02/03/2025 18:03

John major meeting the Spice Girls

garlictwist · 02/03/2025 18:03

I remember the Berlin Wall coming down. I was about 7 and understood it was a Big Deal but had never heard of it before it fell or got why it mattered.

SmugglersHaunt · 02/03/2025 18:03

Playing “Conservatives vs Labour” with the girl next door when we were 5. Not sure what the rules were 🤷🏼‍♀️

RabbitsRock · 02/03/2025 18:04

The 3 day week & having lessons in Portacabins.

Sulu17 · 02/03/2025 18:05

The power cuts in the early 70s and how exciting it was to sit in candlelight, listening to the battery powered transistor radio.

Titasaducksarse · 02/03/2025 18:06

Miner's strikes in the 80s and seeing Scargill and Thatcher discussing it on the news.

ImWearingPantaloons · 02/03/2025 18:06

Thatcher winning and me, in my naivety considering I was 6, saying to my dad 'didn't you vote for her??'

I was soon set straight.

tinydynamine · 02/03/2025 17:19

Thatcher becoming PM...one day after my 10th birthday. Politics before that was a bit of a blur for me.

Same it was just before my 10th birthday. I was really excited about it as well.
Until she snatched my milk!

AndActuallyWhyYoureAtIt · 02/03/2025 18:08

I remember seeing Stop the Poll Tax signs/graffiti everywhere, I was born in 82.. Not sure when this happened.

Leira2025 · 02/03/2025 18:09

Jimmy Carter visiting my home town.

ramonaqueenbee · 02/03/2025 18:09
