Any Tory supporters here?

What happened to this promise, since the NHS is currently on its knees?

If anyone truly believed that bus then they were rather suggestible.

The uk under the Tories has really suffered.
Imagine allowing and encouraging a referendum to leave the EU solely so that rich people could avoid paying some tax.
Imo Cameron, Farage, Johnson and Truss should all be in prison.

Hollyhead · 05/01/2023 06:27

I’m not a supporter of the government but this wasn’t ever a Tory promise. It was a promise of the leave campaign which contained some tories. It is a major flaw in referendums that campaigns can make promises/pledges but actually as each side is not part of an election manifesto they can say what they like. It is a shame our mainstream media didn’t focus more on that fact in 2016.

I don’t think the NHS is able to be ‘saved’ it is very badly run, seems obsessed with issues like trans and diversity instead of health. It can’t survive without patients having some sort of German, French, etc insurance. Free at the point of use is a cute idea but not workable in 2023

Where are you getting this impression? Which Trust do you work for?

it was pretty sneaky the way it was worded but it never actually said that.

it was framed more like 'we currently spend this, but imagine if we freed up that money how it would help the NHS'. headline grabbing and misleading. applying any level of critical thought, it would be obvious they wouldn't just divert all that money from one place to another.

Felix125 · 10/01/2023 13:54

So are there any Tory supporters can justify where this money has gone then?

Well, it seems many did believe it. That's why they voted Brexit ... that and sovereignty. But not racism. No, nothing to do with racism or xenophobia AT all. 🙄

Grantanow · 20/01/2023 13:12

Anyone who watched Question Time last night when Fiona Bruce showed the graph of health spending could not fail to see that the Tories have significantly underfunded the NHS since their coalition deal with the supine Lib Dems. The comparison with the far higher spending under Labour is damning. It gave the lie to Tory claims about their health spending. Now they want to get out of paying the staff a decent pay rise at a time when some of them are driven to use food banks. Of course the Brexit bus slogan was a complete lie to mislead.

Felix125 · 20/01/2023 18:07

.......Of course the Brexit bus slogan was a complete lie to mislead.

I think we all know that and probably knew it at the time

I was just interested if any Tory supporters will either accept that they lie/mislead or if any actually believe it is true and working successfully.

Why is it specifically a tory voter question and not a "voted leave" question

Labour voters voted leave too...

Hollyhead · 20/01/2023 18:22

OP I am not a Tory but you’re being extremely disingenuous - vote leave was not a conservative campaign, indeed some high profile tories supported it, but the position of the Tory govt at the time was to remain. As @VogueDarling rightly points out, many Labour voters also voted to leave, you need to ask people who voted to leave.

Felix125 · 20/01/2023 18:24

Because it was the Tory party at the time who endorsed the slogan on the bus

The Labour party didn't

People voted to leave or remain for various reasons from either party - but the slogan was a Tory thing./

Are they still going to endorse it?

OP posts:
Hollyhead · 20/01/2023 21:25

It absolutely wasn’t, the PM was a Tory who was heading up the Remain campaign.

Abhannmor · 01/02/2023 17:28

Hasn't Boris Johnson explained the £350m was just a little white lie and don't bother your pretty little heads about it?
Anyway it's the EUs fault

True I voted remain, there were a fair few of us who got turned off by last Labour leader but voted remain

There’s a study by Blair institute I think with numbers

The reverse voting pattern is probably true too but didn’t look for those numbers

Grantanow · 02/03/2023 11:24

I blame the French!

The slogan on the bus may have been sneakily worded, but the Leave campaign actually did say that.

Well there's a company called Randox that received £479m in government contracts for Covid testing...

I voted Leave because Boris knows what a woman is and the EU does not.

Felix125 · 03/03/2023 09:24

LuckyThatMyBreastsAreSmallAndHumble · 02/03/2023 21:52

This.

So is it right that politicians can come out with any slogan or false promise to get votes?

Which promises do we believe and we should we ignore?

OP posts:
Cattenberg · 03/03/2023 10:52

For me the most unsettling thing isn’t that Leave campaigners lied, “to get Brexit over the line” (although that was reprehensible).

It’s that in the months after the referendum, many Leave voters realised they had been lied to and didn’t seem to care!

It wasn't a Tory promise, or claim...

Cattenberg · 03/03/2023 11:15

No, of course not. Boris Johnson and Liam Fox were giving a talk and that poster just happened to be the backdrop.
