If starker is serious about abolishing the House of Lords im now politically homeless.

Very keen on most of his policies. This though is a huge mistake. The make up is generally very good though I accept a few get through. Given we've currently had a conservative government for 12 years I have not faith in elections improving things. The fact that lords are there for life and not always politically active means they are not bound to party policies.

They're mostly normal people who have achieved amazing things in their own careers.

They slowed and stopped so many things whilst the conservatives have been in power and protected us. They can only do that because the politicians have no hold over them.

They are mostly there because their mates put them there, either as a reward for services rendered or to not block policies.

And it's Starmer.

It's an area where the LP seems to be taking a wholly ideological stance without actually looking how the system works in practice.

It's clear if you do look that the HOL plays a really important role. And Starmer has nothing to say about how that role might be fulfilled in some other way.

The reason is that his ideological position tells him that more elections are always better. Taken to its logical conclusion this is how you get countries like the US where people vote for sheriffs and judges. He can't see this because he's an ideologue.

I’ve amazed myself, but I agree. I want to keep theHoL as I like a buffer between me and the elected representatives. I would love the elected representatives to be thoughtful, caring and decent but that isn’t how I see them. I like to think that the HoL is a bit like the civil service in Jim Hacker’s government in that it's job is to stop the MPs doing anything too stupid.
