Is there a mechanism for an early general election?

This is my prediction of how things will play out. Truss becomes PM. Inflation and fuel prices continue to surge. This leads to massive social unrest and extensive strikes over Winter and into Spring. People are very, very unhappy. Truss is widely seem to have no effective strategy to deal with the crisis. It all gets a bit scary.

Under the fixed term parliament act, is there a mechanism for an early general election? What do you think is the most likely outcome?

People still have their heads in the sand and still keep voting the Tories in.

I think I've heard of some historic law where there can't be a general election within 6 months of a monarch's death.

You’d need about 30 Tories to defect. Many know they are losing their seats. They want to keep claiming those salaries as long as they can.

Fixed term parliament act has been repealed but the Tories are basically doing what they have always wanted to and be aren't likely to step down. So civil unrest is probably the only way although I think the government would probably have to resign if the pound continues to plummet and the IMF is forced to step in to bail us out.
