Last night I was heart broken to hear of the proposed destruction of the Sutton Trust Estate. Until the death of my father a few years ago my family had lived on the Estate since before Second World War. It's history is unique. William Sutton bequeathed money to build "model homes" for the poor. His instruction was that the managers were to "break even" but not make a profit. Chelsea in those days was a very poor place and the land was secured easily. Over the years modernisations took place and by the time my parents died they were living with a modern kitchen, bathroom etc and the buildings were a lovely place to live. All was well until the Trust got into bed with Affinity, a huge money making housing association. By delaying improvements they claimed that the flats were in need of pulling down and then they could build luxury accommodation for the needy rich foreigners eager for a home in that part of London. The rest of the flats will have rents raised beyond the residents ability to pay. Only the Labour Party has be supportive in the residents desperate plight at a time when affordable housing in London is supposedly on the agenda. Eddie Izzard and other celebrities have been vocal but where is Boris Johnson in all this? Where does this end? It is significant that Affinity have blocked out the word Trust on the front of these lovely Victorian buildings.
