That should, I hope, lead you to the conclusion that differences in social policy between this government and the last one are practically non-existent - which they are, this government and the last one being almost identical in almost all areas of policy.

You might have more luck comparing the last Labour government with the Major or Thatcher governments.

niceguy2 · 29/05/2012 09:39

I thought the same as hamster to be honest.

Essentially the only difference between Labour & Tories are how quickly to make the cuts. And given the Tories have been forced to slow the pace of the cuts there's really nothing between them.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 29/05/2012 12:14

I would suggest the 'Universal Credit' idea. There has been some Labour involvement in the shape of Frank Field but it is otherwise a Coalition policy and it differs quite a lot from the previous Labour approach to welfare in several key areas. The white paper is published on the DWP website in full and, from that, you should get some of the key differences e.g. consolidation of payments rather than many separate ones, caps on total pay-outs and the concept of conditionality. Welfare as 'a means to getting back to work' is also a rather different objective to the previous role of welfare which centred around 'reducing child poverty'.

All the Coalition slave labour projects, oops mean workfare projects would be an interesting one - introduced under Labour but turned into an inhumane fascist bastard of a policy by the current lot.

Aren't libararies a local authority budget priority matter rather than a top-down political one?

Tortington · 30/05/2012 19:23

to meet huge budget cuts imposed by govt - not considered an essential service - unnless your in a tory leafy village with volunteers who value knowledge (read retired MC types) and then you are the epitome of DCs BS (big society Wink)

And that kind of ignorant prejudice gets you an academic qualification? Hmm

flatpackhamster · 31/05/2012 07:51

When the majority of lecturers are socialists, it probably does.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 31/05/2012 08:13

Cogito, I'd be surprised if Custy phrased it like that in her essay Grin. And if she has case study evidence to back up her assertions, then what's the problem? (bear in mind I am from the world of science where things work a bit differently)

I can't imagine many people go to study politics without having political opinions, do you think DC did the 'P' of his PPE from a position of total disinterest?

Although I do know a couple of people who studied theology without believing in god, which seems the most phenomenal waste of time... Hmm

Tortington · 31/05/2012 23:33

Cogito, the silly thing is, when i posted this, you were the only non lefty i could think of and so i hoped you would contribute to make me think, and look things up, research and cogitate on things that hadn't occurred to me. I found your last comment spiteful and unnecessary.

Just so you are aware, i may post other threads asking for help and suggestions. If you don't feel capable of being less mean spirited, it would help me greatly if you didn't post.

Thank you to all who tried to help
