I don't think they are even tax avoiding - they are just not UK based. Other firms do the selling and distributing in the UK, and they pay tax don't they?

Interesting, as this appears to be an example of a country swerving UK because of tax policy, and basing it's European operations elsewhere in EU.

Even more interesting is th claim that only now is the taxman investigating Amazon's tax situation from 2004 until redomiciling away from UK in 2010. Why on earth was that not dealt with in the 6 years it was happening?

Because tax returns go in a year after accounts date (so could be 2 years after transaction). Because hmrc then have a year (or sometimes more to enquire ). Because it usually takes a while for
Them to look at tax returns to gain sufficient info to dig into peoples affairs .

And there is tax law around this so if apple is avoiding tax on activities that should have been taxed here. But if they aren't actually doing much here (ie sales manufacturing etc) is elsewhere , then the corporate tax may be quite low.

meditrana - Absolutely. Ireland has an extremely low corporation tax rate, which is why it became the Celtic Tiger in the first place (they didn't really have a debt crisis initially but a banking crisis, which became a sovereign debt crisis when they underwrote all their banks' losses - why?).

Because socialists want high taxes. Tories generally support a business-friendly, low-tax, regime. So from Apple we would get a small tranche of a huge amount of money as opposed to the almost nothing at all we currently receive. If we were as competitive as Ireland with their corpoation tax rate of 12.5%, Apple would not need to service the UK from Cork.

I don't think socialists want high taxes for all but, hey, you carry on with your swinging generalisations on here and other threads...

We have to be realistic. I doubt that our EU competitors would allow us to have a 12.5% corporation tax rate.

I only know one person with Apple stuff and he is such a sheep it wouldn't surprise me if he'd filmed himself at some point giving bum love to his Mac.

As for everyone else I know, a couple of people have Ipods because they got them free with student bank accounts, a lot of people used to have iphones back in 07 but they have all gotten over it now and have gone back to Samsungs or moved on to HTC.

I myself haven't had anything Apple related since the Macintosh II si.
