How many people on this site believe Thatcher created a cult of individualism in this country ?

Also, if you believe Thatcher had the power to destroy society/communities.

How do you think she did this ?

I think I made a reasonable statement there, considering the amount of Thatcher threads I have seen recently.

I'm pleased to see I'm not the only one who thinks ivanhoe is obsessed with the woman.

Although I am pleased to see the lack of ///// nowadays.

Can I Join in????
I am just about nold wnough to remember some of the misery created by thatcher and her governement in the late 70's and 80's, I am from the midlands and alot of my extended family are from Cornwall. Here in the Midlands many towns and cities have never recvovered from the collapse of the mining industry and the car manufacturing: Peugeot, Jaguar, Rolls Royce, Massey Ferguson, Rover, JCB, Dunlop they have pretty much all gone.
How can anywhere recover from losing all those massive employers on top of the mines all going under.
The culture of greed is absolutely right and still very much there now, Yes...I think that people who work hard should reep the benefits of that work and be rewarded but qwe have to look out for eachother because not everyone is a benefit sponger as much as the tories would like us to believe. I think we need to 'look after ourselves' and 'take care' of eachother. Instead of floggin teenage mothers from getting pregnant for a free flat or life on benefits, think about what it says about our society where these young girls feel that is their best option !!!"""

BRILLIANT, SUPERBLY OBSERVED, YOU HAVE NAIL ED IT.

Thatcher used tax cuts as a bride toi get votes off ordinary working class Britiain's and it worked.

I dont know your age, but you know what you are talking about.

Thatcher never cared about the poor, she only cared about the elite.

Apparently from your posts, you're no gent!Grin

Ivanhoe. Thatcher 'only cared about the elite'. Yes and so did Blair and his chums, but you don't bang on about him, do you? The labour party ruined the country, but I would not continually criticise them, it's pointless.

The Labour party is not in power and neither is Lady Thatcher.

I think you've made your point.... you hate Thatcher!Smile

"New" Labour were Thatcherite in fundamental policy making. But they did at least try to help the poor.

I dont hate Thatcher so much as I despise her pathetic supporers.

Thatcher herself may be gone, but her legacy of greed, immorality, and self interest remain with us, and always will I fear.

Litchick · 31/01/2011 14:44

During her time as PM, I loathed her and pretty much blamed her for all the country's ills.

But I was a teenager, and more than a little naive.

Now I see her in context and although I disagree still with many of her policies, I can appreciate that the UK had to make some pretty huge changes and that some of those were necessarily painful.

littlemisslost · 31/01/2011 20:48

I stand by what I said and I think that we need a huge shift in our attitude, ALL OF US! we seem to look after the wrong people in this country and I think the whole bankers businsess has shown just how vulnerable we are s a country to not our 'governement' but the rich and the powerful bankers. They have prob done as much damage as Thatcher in a much shorter time span the only difference is we could single her and her craziness out and we cant do that to the bankers. We will all be paying for their risk taking and wrecklessness for generations to come

ivanhoe · 31/01/2011 22:57

""We will all be paying for their risk taking and wrecklessness for generations to come""

Its called the free market, and its the worst political ideoligy, because it looks after the wealthy instead of proper wealth distribution which is what this country needs.

And yes we will be paying for years to come because we still have the same system.

Ivanhoe. 'I haven't even started yet'....ooh
no, you're going to send shivers down the other posters backs.

But not out of fear..........They will be reaching for the nearest noose to wrap aroung their necks out of boredom! Grin

I've grown a beard out of boredom, since you started on about our dear old Lady Thatcher, and I'm not a man! groan..............

I believe Thatcher only cared about things that had a cash value and could be sold off by the pound. She did her best to asset strip Britain. The NHS, education, society, the arts had no value to her and she would happily have let them all go to wall. I am in my late fifties and remember her with no affection or admiration.
