"no rich people went into pop singing"

Rubbish. How about Crispian John David Boulting (Crispian Mills) of Kula Shaker? Grandson of Sir John Mills and son of Hayley. Or Pink Floyd's independently educated Dave Gilmour (Perse School, Cambridge). The late great Freddie Mercury - not working class roots. Instruments, music lessons, transport... bands need cash so it pays to have at least one band-member with some of it.

Football... obvious why it's a poor man's sport. No equipment or special playing surfaces required. Hence popularity in S.America, Africa etc. 'Toffs' prevalent at tennis, golf, rugby etc.
