David Miliband went to see her at her home for a chat, as did Gordon Brown once before in unhappier circumstances. The result of the meeting was that Gillian Duffy has endorsed David Miliband, who said the Labour Party will be behind people like Mrs. Duffy.

Is the leadership election all over? Has the kingmaker, Mrs. Duffy, scuppered the others' chances? Will David Miliband need to pull any more rabbits out of the hat, or can he now rest easy?

Will the new protocol be to see Mrs Duffy if the PM wants to dissolve parliament? A weekly audience to discuss foreign policy perhaps? Note to any Millibands reading... Having a cup of tea with an ordinary person doesn't make you look ordinary.
