Tell me about Ouija boards, I am curious

Have any of you ever used it? I am curious as to whether it can answer questions and who I can speak to. Is it a myth or should I leave my hands off it as it is dangerous or have I simply watched too many horror movies and it's all a ruse?

Its a bit of board with markings on it.

People use it to trick gullible types - or just for 'fun'. Its only danger is if you are fool enough to believe it and it upsets you or makes you do something stupid.

Roan · 04/02/2010 11:36

Thanks Grimma, so I must have watched too many scary movies LOL

I have been offered one by a friend and I thought I might take it and try

What's the procedure?

It's a myth. It works by a person pushing the glass towards the letters - either consciously to trick you, or else subconsciously, because they "want" it to say something to them - so you ask a question and push a bit towards Yes if that's what you want to hear, or think you're going to hear.

Roan · 04/02/2010 11:51

I think we might use it as a side table for drinks then And I thought it would be fun to poke around a bit. Thank you for the clarification. Feeling a bit dumb now that I ever thought it could work for real.. LOL

I disagree. Ouija boards are not something that should be messed round with. They are a way of inviting in unwelcome spirits.

LilRedWG · 16/02/2010 12:40

My parents went on one many many years ago, before any of us were born. They never told me what happened but I know it scared the pants off them both.

Marne · 16/02/2010 12:46

Not a Myth at all (well i thought it was until i tried it). I used to do it at a place i worked at (never do it at home), it took me a while to believe it and then i saw the glass move after we all took our fingers off. I have done it quite a few times since with friends that i trust and i have found it very interesting, have talked to interesting people including a relitive. Not sure if i would do it now i am older (not as brave) but i don't regret doing it at all.

Speckledeggy · 20/02/2010 21:40

No, i would leave it well alone.

We are surrounded by spirits - some are good and some are evil. If you want to communicate with them you should protect yourself first. Without doing this, anything can appear. You really need to know what you're doing. There is so much out there and most people haven't a clue.

meltedchocolate · 21/02/2010 22:11

Another vote for leaving well alone.

I have done one. None of us were/are the type to fake it, if anyone I would have been more likely to, but it was not faked. You dont know what you're messing with. Please stay well away. It will not give you answers. It isn't like a phonecall to the dead. Don't underestimate things like ouiji boards.

zozzle · 25/02/2010 18:55

Very, very dangerous stuff - leave well alone!! Do it at your peril. Tarot cards are another evil thing that wrecks lives.

You are looking in the wrong direction - look to Christ instead.

Sekhmet · 26/02/2010 00:05

I vote no too! It a subject that divides opinion, but I think if you are even slightly worried about it you shouldn't bother, even if it's just because you will freak yourself out with it!

NB: tarot cards don't wreck lives, people's dependence on them telling them what to do does! Just as some people won't do things until it's been okayed by their friends etc

Monty100 · 26/02/2010 00:11

OP - don't mess with it.

This is like a prayer.

I've looked to Christ and he has turned away.

I suppose Christ has looked at me and I have turned away.

Where does that leave us?

Wrong thread I know.

Monadami · 26/02/2010 01:20

I wouldn't dabble in it, especially if you don't know what you are doing.

ThePFJ · 27/02/2010 16:01

Leave them WELL alone. Seriously.

onagar · 27/02/2010 23:57

The only thing you can get from an Ouija board is a bad case of woodworm.

Seriously there is a potential psychological danger, but only to someone who wants badly to believe in 'unseen forces' and who is likely to work themselves up to imagine it happened when it didn't.

Of course they would be in the same danger if exposed to a church service (any religion)

Greensleeves · 28/02/2010 00:06

it's a bag o' shite and a waste of time

that's it

Valpollicella · 28/02/2010 00:11

Ouija boards are best left well alone.

Tarot cards shouldn't even be mentioned... totoally different. They are a 'tool' to help people look at their lives and nake the changes the feel5

sallyjaygorce · 28/02/2010 01:27

I tried it once but we were all laughing too much to stop the glass shaking.

Wouldn't do it in my family home with my children though...just in case. A friend said she did it and the glass didn't move at all but a camera on a side table spontaneously shot a whole reel of film which freaked them out. As you might imagine. If you have any feeling it might 'work', don't do it. If are you confidently cynical and think it will be funny...it's upi to you.

BOO!!!!

Tortington · 28/02/2010 01:36

lol @tarrot being evil.

the ouija board was invented as a game which had nothing to do with spirits.

It is copywrited and is a game. originally it was invented as a game where each player tried to read the others minds.

its nothing more than that - all the extra hype is made up bollocks.

tarot - is as evil as horoscopes. i had a deck once, i liked to play and read my fortune - but only believed in it as much as i do reading what mystic med has instore for me on any given day.

10greenbottles · 21/03/2010 15:50

I tried it too , about 30 years ago! Yeah it worked, but don't try it. Dad told me never to do it again...........

mintcandy · 22/03/2010 17:28

Please don't mess about with ouija board.
I personally strongly believe there is something truly dodgey about it.

First tried it when I was 15, my cousin's idea. There were three of us - her, muself and my sister. I will not go into details but what started as innocent fun quickly turned to some spooky spectacle, lights and taps turning on by themselves, objects flying off shelves. It was preceeded by whoever was talking to us threatening stabbing and other macabre stuff.

I know, I know, sounds very made up but cross my heart, over 20 years later and I keep thinking it over and over and cannot get my head round it how we could have imagined it. The worst part for me was after we ran away from the house to my grandma's flat just round the corner and she said in a very stoical matter of fact voice ' You called up ghosts, didn't you ? '

Second time , about two years later, I have done it again, carried away one evening on a school trip. Felt safe in numbers, there were about seven of us.
To start with ,again , it was quite innocent. We were asking questiones like how many of us would fail a maths test, our future boyfriends' names, etc. Suddenly, the tone changed and ' the ghost' became shockingly foul mouthed and again talking macabre stuff, like a baby being murder with an axe by his mother in the cellar of the house we were staying in( sorry if too awful but this is what I remember most ), evil things. We were all very shocked and frightened and I do not believe at all that any of us was faking, moving the saucer ( it was a home made board ) by herself, the way it was moving, it was not normal.

You will think how on earth and why did I dabble in this once more, I don't know, really don't have an answer. It was at a summer camp and all I remember is that there was a girl whose father recently passed away from heart attack, we called up his spirit and the girl went totally hysterical. Actually still feel guilty about this one, not that I faked her dad , I didn't, but I instigated the seance.
By the way, I do not believe it was her dad answering at all.

It's because I now truly believe you do conjure up spirits but only the evil ones, that may appear friendly at first but soon reveal their true nature.

Haven't touched the board since my teen years and learned soon after that calling up departed spirits is solemnly forbidden by the Bible, you open the door to some unknown dangerous world, the least that can happen you can be deceived, the worst probably losing your mind. There is lots of stories on the net of other people's experiences and some are truly terrifying, mine are a walk in the park in comparison.

Now, I have no way of proving to you that it's not all made up. It happened to me, that's what I experienced, up to you to believe it or you can try rationalize it.
But basically, you asked for opinion and muy message to you is AVOID !!!

10greenbottles · 22/03/2010 17:48

I believe all you write mintcandy.I did not get as involved as you but mum brother and I held a couple of seances with scary results! We did not understand but blamed each other. Unfortunately, my brother took his own life about 10 years later.

mintcandy · 23/03/2010 14:36

I'm really sorry about your brother 10greenbottles. Really sad he found life too heavy a burden. Even though a stranger and it happens to a lot of people, still so sad to hear/read.

mintcandy · 23/03/2010 14:39

I reread my thread and am about some bad grammar/spelling/typing errors. Was in a rush.....
