Does this amuse or infuriate Christians?

If you park in front of a church, it might .

oodlesofpoodles · 02/07/2009 18:36

I wouldn't be amused or infuriated. I don't get Darwin stickers. Are they supposed to be saying that Christians don't believe in Darwinian evolution and the person who owns the car does? I prefer it to 'Princess on board' stickers.

pinkmagic1 · 02/07/2009 18:40

I really hate those baby on board stickers. I have just ordered one for my cay that says 'Who cares whos on board!.

lljkk · 02/07/2009 18:46

I don't suppose it is anti-Christian but anti-Creationist. Just that for some people their Christianity firmly underpins their Creationism, and a Christian symbol is being used in to make the pro-evolution point. Guess I'm saying I don't know how sacred the Christian Fish symbol is. I don't actually want to offend people greatly (provoke debate ok, but not upset them, ifswim).

why has it got a spanner?

LaurieFairyCake · 02/07/2009 18:59

I'm a Christian.

I have that sticker.

And a fish.

Most Christians in this country believe in evolution.

Disclaimer: if you have the sticker and you're in America don't park outside a church unless you don't like your car

oodlesofpoodles · 02/07/2009 19:07

I have seen one with the both the fish kissing.

weegiemum · 02/07/2009 19:08

oooh oooh I want the kissing fish!

BONKERZ · 02/07/2009 19:13

i have a mumsnet one that says PARP!!!!!

MrsJamin · 02/07/2009 19:24

I don't care, most christians would believe in evolution. Are you trying to provoke a reaction? If so, you should find another way of amusement, it's a bit sad to be honest.

Overmydeadbody · 02/07/2009 19:30

lljkk you can actually buy little feet stickers that go under the fish and you can go and stick them on cars belonging to christians who have the fish sticker in their car

I think that owuld be funnier (provided the owners of the car had a sense of humour)

stillstanding · 02/07/2009 19:37

Is the Darwin sticker supposed to be anti-Christian? I always thought it was pro-Christian and pro-evolution given that the two are entirely compatible but perhaps I am being too generous?

MaryBS · 02/07/2009 19:42

It wouldn't bother me, might even get one myself as a Christian who believes in evolution, or something similar, being God-inspired.

KTNoo · 02/07/2009 20:22

Why are Christianity and evolution incompatible?

Where can I get kissing fish?

lljkk · 03/07/2009 13:43

It has a tool southeastra because more evolved creatures (more evolved than Fish, anyway) use tools.

Um, no, not trying to start a fight. I just like the fish with feet, is it ok for humanists to say so publicly? I recently read Neil Shute's book where he wrote all about discovering Tikalaak (spelling?): a fish with feet.

Only if it was left in front of a radical fundamentalist church.

However, this one might get you into trouble.......

weegiemum · 03/07/2009 13:49

lljkk - "Your Inner Fish" ?

A fab book, I loved it! Really interesting and I was so impressed by him giving the Inuit people in the area he found the fish the choice of naming it.

I went over the pics int eh book with my kids - they loved all the stuff about all of us having one bone - two bones - lotsa blobs!

And we are a serious churchgoing Christian happy clappy family ... but evolution is also our thing!

KayHarkerIsKayHarker · 03/07/2009 15:03

I find them a bit meh, tbh. The ichthus fish was originally a secret symbol type thing for persecuted Christians to identify themselves. It's really nothing at all to do with creationism, so I find the darwin fish a bit odd, really, like they're trying to be offensive, because Christian doesn't equate with creationist.

I believe in special creation. Haven't a clue how it was achieved, but you know, all powerful God, finite me, I don't think it matters in the slightest.

So, as a Christian, I believe in the reasonable law of the land, so even if your were to put a sticker of a cross on your car that says 'If you're a Christian, you're an idiot' I wouldn't trash it.

Might not feel like smiling at you as you drove past, though (although I probably still would, because I'm a bit ditzy like that).

spongebrainmaternitypants · 03/07/2009 19:20

I started a similar thread to this the other day:

Darwin fish

Had one on my car for a couple of years now and this is the first time I've had this happen! Although I did have my wing mirrors kicked off the car a couple of months ago - I put it down to mindless vandals, but maybe it was an angry Christian !

I'm getting a new car soon and plan to have an FSM one instead next time!

UnquietDad · 03/07/2009 19:26

It all gets a bit silly in the end. Just ichthyology versus theology.

Fossie · 18/10/2009 00:25

Made me smile. I am happy to go with the 'God made the world in 6 days' thing though I somehow don't throw out all the evolution theory either - just the bit between species and not within. Not everyone (christian or otherwise) knows the original fish symbol meaning anyway. My mother thought it was the symbol for the make of my car! Like to think that if you know what the original symbol is for you would appreciate a 'secret' joke on the christian world. There are plenty of real things to be offended about in this big old world.
