Lesson on Martin Luther King

AFter half term have been put down for a whole morning with the scariest ever class of y5/6, mostly boys with emotional issues who hate writing. Am doing famous Christians in RE at the moment and thought of doing the morning on MLK, with drama, maybe cartoons, etc, even using ICT (all ideas lovely MNers have given me for this awful class). Has anyone ever done any successful activities on MLK they would like to share? Will post this in education bit, too.

Hi racingsnake. Is anything on these sites of any use?

Black History Month

Martin Luther King day

There are lots of sites with material for BHM.

I taught MLK to Yr5 recently...

My tips are - make it real. UK kids have no idea what segregation is, really, so make that point to begin with - choose something supurfluous (multilink blocks or something to half the class - half with get to sit on tables cos they are now "better", half without on carpet/floor area for the intro)

Use the Dream Speech - can you get it on youtube for them on the interactive whiteboard? They could write their own dream speech - what do they want to change in their world? This could be a drama piece seeing as they don't like writing - act out the parts they want to change.

Conscience Alley - one side campaigning for human rights, the other side for things staying as they are - what would you choose to do? (can find a clip on Teachers TV if you don't know what this looks like)

errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, can't think of much else atm!

you could do a play, acting out his life for assembly?

Great! Will look for conscience alley on Teachers TV. Have downloaded the dream speech as suggested. Thanks.

Also, Obama referenced 'I have a dream' in his inaugration speech- can't get more relevant than that.
