My husband is godfather to our nephew (his brother's eldest son) and he was today asked to be his sponsor at his confirmation in April. He of course gladly accepted the invitation.

Firstly, does anyone know what a sponsor has to do? (Its a catholic confirmation and I am C of E so have no experience).

Secondly, as a sponsor (and godfather) what would be an appropriate gift?

He is 13 year old young lad if that helps!

Thanks in advance

Seems to have a good explanation on that link. Mainly a sponsor prays for the child, shares some religious thoughts or writings with them, and is there in the ceremony to put a hand on the child's shoulder and tell the Bishop the child's chosen Saint Name.

A good gift is something religious that's to do with the Saint the child chooses, perhaps. If it's the Patron Saint of carpentry, some fine bit of religiously-carved wood, etc?

I had great fun with a book of Saint's Names, helping a young female friend of the family to choose hers from it.
