As much as I love my Good News bible I got for my confirmation many years ago (I was a Methodist hence the GN version )I really want a new one.

Am swaying towards The Message, but also wondering about the Contemporary English Version) are there any other "modern" translation ones I could look at?

I prefer the NRSV - see bible.oremus.org

I like the Message, but not for serious bible study.

You can also look at www.biblegateway.com for other versions.

Try looking up a favourite passage, see which you prefer.

I personally use NIV most of the time - find it clear and easy to understand (well as much as any of it is!) but also use Message as a comparison, find it gives a fresh view of a contemporary passage.

I'm not really keen on the NIV - have had a look at it before and just don't get on with it.

I've had a look at biblegateway - and still can't make up my mind lol.

I don't like the NIV either...

I really like the New Jerusalem Bible, its a good translation, but people tend to say "Catholic" when they see that... also, don't think its available online, so you can't have a look see. I remember having to type out 1 Cor 13 in full, for my sister's wedding

Another vote for NRSV here. It's very accurate to the originals - far more so than NIV which goes for ease-of-use above accuracy. The only aspect which is not that accurate is that some terms have been changed to be more "gender-inclusive" - if you don't want that, then you could look at the RSV, which is less inclusive but very accurate.
