Because for me it is all just crazy. There is no proof of anything.

Sorry to hear you're having a rough time, and that people are making you feel angry with their well-meant but frankly daft platitudes.

Personally, I believe in God because I have a strong sense of the presence of something other than myself or my conscience, and I have come to the conclusion that it is God.

But I don't believe that God is "looking after me" or will "make my life get better" even though I'm a committed believer, so quite why they think God would be doing those things for you, I can't imagine. It doesn't work that way, even if you believe.

TheFallenMadonna · 30/06/2008 20:45

Don't know why I do. Can't seem to rationalise myself out of it. Just believe.

Or is this just a rant?

Ignore tactless people

ummadam · 01/07/2008 12:41

Possibly the same reason they believe in a real bargain, hope, fair play, good manners, a sunny bank holiday etc when we rarely see much evidence of them either

Many people find it comforting or easier to deal with life is they see their life to have a particular meaning and for the bad things that happen to have a reason. If you are toiling at work all day when someone else gets things for free for example it is nice to think there will be reward in it for you at the end.

Personally I look around the world and think WOW! For me there is enough evidence in a single leaf to prove the existence of an intelligent creator.

How you choose to act on this awareness (denial, adherence to a particular religion or simply a more spiritual outlook) is a different question altogether and can be left for another thread

ummadam · 01/07/2008 12:46

on a more personal note, I'm sorry things aren't going well for you at the moment.

If you were the same faith as me i would tell you that Allah has a plan even if it doesn't make sense to us now, it will later and encourage you to pray. If I was sad and someone said that to me it would make me feel better because it fits with MY beliefs.

If you told my mum she would suggest a "nice cup of tea will cure what ails you" . Works for her but not for me and probably not for you.

When someone is low. everyone wants to help but noone knows how - What sounds like meaningless platitudes to you are them saying "I'm sorry you're hurting, I feel helpless but i do care".

xx

What I don't understand is why God doesn't look after his churches, after all they're Gods Houses, yet he doesn't seem to upkeep them and people who visit them are asked to pay.

piratecat · 01/07/2008 12:48

I guess you have to belive that there is something to cling too, that your human spirit is indeed special.

Sorry you're not feeling good agbu.

not *again^- are there no nw threads? wot about if i spk in txt? thn u cn strt a new thrd theme? (sorry dont actually know text speak lol)

i belive because:

i trust my instincts and my instincts tell me there is a God

because i am intelligent adult able to make my own choices (raised atheist so very much so)

because it makes me feel happy

because i am as free to make my cjhoices as you are to make your own

that's it really, i guess it comes down to

because i want to

Iwantmybed · 01/07/2008 12:53

I guess they're trying to look out for you in their own way. I do hope things get better for you soon though.

PeachyHidingInTheShed · 01/07/2008 12:55

i want my bed church and God not the same tjing at all! Christoan history clear on this! Church is a human creation in terms of formal c of e etc. Not sayingchurch is bad (varies), but it is human

A friend is an evangelical miniter who receives no wage (her dh the same) only what her 'flock' choose to give. She always has enough- not lots but enough. We interpret that as God Provides, others would not I know.

PeachyHidingInTheShed · 01/07/2008 12:57

agbu sorry things are tough. things can improve- I am evidence of that- but when you are at the lowest its hard to see that I know

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 01/07/2008 12:58

The concept of God does not mean that everything has to be peachy. That it isn't, doesn't mean that He doesn't love us and is not there.

Not believing in Him doesn't mean He (She?) isn't there either. It's out of our hands really - God is God, there to draw strength from if you choose.

Am quite surprised at myself, that I came with that thougt today of all says when I have just unexpectedly lost one of my best friends a month short of her 33rd birthday.

Iwantmybed · 01/07/2008 12:58

You're very wise on these matters Peachy. You've studied world religions haven't you? I'm fascinated by them, I tried to get into it all a few years ago, but it was all too much.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 01/07/2008 13:00

Footnote: the term "peachy" in my post to not refer, of course, to our Peachy!

PeachyHidingInTheShed · 01/07/2008 13:02

lol shiny- that did make me double take

PeachyHidingInTheShed · 01/07/2008 13:03

yes iwmb but i wouls, sad;y, say i am larned... wisdom is far off

PeachyHidingInTheShed · 01/07/2008 13:04

(I have an excellent intro guide, if you ever want to borrow just cat)

Greyriverside · 01/07/2008 13:04

Your life probably will get better, but not because of god. But they are probably trying to cheer you up and don't know what else to say.

Feel free to say "I don't believe in all that" and change the subject. If they won't take the hint then wait til they have a problem and offer to speak to santa about it

Greyriverside · 01/07/2008 13:06

Actually if I am feeling bad I don't want people to say it will get better anyway. I want them to tell me I have it really bad and be sympathetic.

PeachyHidingInTheShed · 01/07/2008 13:06

actually as a christian if someone says i dont beive i would be happy to accept that

i'm not naturaly vangelical though, i dont feel that role is for me

KayHarker · 01/07/2008 13:27

people say all sorts of things when they don't quite know what to say. They usually mean well even if what comes out of their mouths is deeply unhelpful.

If you genuinely want an answer to your question, I believe in a deity for a number of reasons, but the easiest shorthand is that I see evidence for design in creation, just like ummadam said.
