Mystery Garlic behind our house

Hi. Didn't know where to put this thread, thought I'd try here.

Over the last 2 or 3 weeks, I keep finding bits of garlic behind our house. I removed it a couple of times, but more appeared. I assumed it was DH because he has form for strange ideas. I finally got round to asking, and it turns out it wasn't him! Kids are equally puzzled. We don't have many neighbours, and they mostly keep to themselves.

Googled it a bit, saw it's supposed by some to help with protection /warding off evil. So although it feels a bit creepy, because I don't know who is doing it, it is probably nothing to worry about....?!!

Any ideas or explanations?

It's probably squirrels or mice digging up bulbs, or rooting through compost.

GoodWater · 29/04/2026 14:41

How much garlic are we talking about? A clove every couple of weeks, or a fresh garlic mandala rearranged nightly? Could it be wild garlic that someone's pulling up nearby?

Blarn · 29/04/2026 14:45

Tiny slim fresh cloves are very likely to be wild garlic which has been in season the last few weeks. Are there little white flowers and pointed leaves?

Your neighbours next door are vampires and the other neighbours know this and are going round all the village and making protective rings round everyones house. 🧛‍♀️🧛

PeatandDieselfan · 29/04/2026 15:24

It's not wild garlic. It's (probably) shop bought cloves of garlic, whole bulbs broken up slightly. Too much and too deliberately placed (twice on top of the log pile beside the back door, twice on the path) for animals. @Flannelfeet yeah that's where my head went as well..?!

Is someone trying to use it to keep cats (or foxes) away? Apparently they don't like the smell (not that it's ever worked for me).

Is anyone in your household a vampire (or people might reasonably suspect they are a vampire)?

7238SM · 29/04/2026 15:29

I just googled and this came up:
Yes, birds—particularly pests like crows, magpies, and starlings—will dig up and eat newly planted garlic bulbs

Decacaffeinatednow · 29/04/2026 15:30

My neighbour says it deters seagulls. She often leaves in in her garden and on the roof of her shed.

PeatandDieselfan · 29/04/2026 15:50

We have 3 cats and none of them seems to give a toss. And if our neighbours were trying to deter the cats, surely they would put the garlic around their own place, why would they come round to our back door (nowhere near anyone else's property)?

We're nowhere near the coast, no seagulls.

Birds digging up newly planted garlic sort of could make sense, but why do they put it on our woodpile? Maybe it's the birds trying to get rid of our cats?

Our teenager does do some vampirish stuff at the moment, maybe someone is afraid of him?

Sooo strange....

You've got vampires living at the end of your garden.
