Why do young Muslim girls wear headscarves?

I saw a young Muslim girl, in primary school aged about 6 playing out today who was wearing a headscarf.

It is the first time I have ever seen a very young child wear one, and wondered why.

I always assumed when I saw a very young girl wearing a deadscarf (ie primary age) that is was because they wanted to be like their mummy.

oops sorry did mean headscarf not deadscarf.

I thought that too. I understand that in the Qur'an there is something along the lines of women not being allowed to show off their beauty, (hair and body) to anyone UNLESS they won't be getting married to them. In other words, only a husband and other women.

I wasn't sure if the girl came from a strict Muslim family or not-or as Elk says she wants to be like her Mum.

I wish there was a definitive guide to all religions and traditions! I read today, that a Sikh girl couldn't wear her bracelet for school. I couldn't find much information when I googled it!

There are some very young girls at the dc school who cover their hair - some from around 2-3 of age. They are virtually all of East African origin.

riven, I always thought the same as you until a while ago.
