Have you ever asked your child if they remember their past lives?

I'm thinking I might give it a whirl, when DS is talking properly. Any good stories about this?

dd has come up with some things like i was you mommy now you are my mommy. i talk to her baout it but don't make a big deal of it.

pointydog · 21/05/2008 17:25

What would be the purpose of asking?

Sazisi · 21/05/2008 17:28

Hmm..I think asking them would be planting the notion in their head to be honest.

No I wouldn't because it would be ridiculous.

Displacement, lots of kids at that age don't have a strong concept of age etc so many would think they might be a baby again at some point...just as some might say they have been/will be the other gender

Would be far kinder to the child not to ask leading questions of them

It's hard enough for them to find their understanding of the real world, and the real world is a scary place for little children. they don't need this sort of rubbish implanted.

Vivace · 21/05/2008 18:15

What a stupid, leading question!

da
you did say that it there was no harm mentioning it though not past lives
did wonder what that means and how it could be done?

DeeRiguer · 21/05/2008 18:44

actually reading op it says "give it a whirl"
flippant postpisstakes ..is this a wind up?

cadelaide · 21/05/2008 18:45

I think DS would say he was a Bionicle

bohemianbint · 21/05/2008 21:29

Nope...not a wind up!

Just read a really interesting book about reincarnation and a lot of stories focus on children volunteering "memories". One woman said jokingly to her child "where did we get you from" and got a surprising answer.

Obviously not everyone believes in reincarnation, not sure I entirely do myself, but it was a really interesting read and I wondered how common it was...

my younger sis can remember her past lives and when she was v young she used to tell my mum that even though she loved her very much she was very sad that she couldnt see her other mummy and daddy any more!

she told my mum loads of things that used to do in her past life and has started to remember more and more as she got older.

i think if they do remember anything they will mention it anyway in chatter as my sister did if you ask them about they will just make something up to please you

HonoriaGlossop · 21/05/2008 23:12

well I can't say strongly enough bohemianbint, that I don't think you should 'give this a whirl' with your child. It's a totally different matter putting your own ideas if or when a child might volunteer things which are about 'previous lives', to actually ASKING them about it and therefore leading them and implanting ideas for which there is no proof

I think it's a parent's role to help them make sense of the world, not impant ideas based on nothing which will only serve to at best, confuse them and at worst damage them

LynetteScavo · 21/05/2008 23:18

I would never ask.

I didn't believe in past lives untill ds1 ws born, and he just seems to have lived before. He just knows so much. The trouble is, I don't think his past life was a happy one.

nancy75 · 21/05/2008 23:21

isnt it funny how people who have past life regression always have really exciting past lives? they never just worked in the local sweet shop, had 2 kids and died of old age in their sleep. makes me abit suspicious.

SmugColditz · 21/05/2008 23:24

No, but if I did, I am sure he would have been a very brave person, a knight or a great conquerer or or or a power ranger......

bohemianbint · 22/05/2008 10:31

Obviously I wouldn't sit him down and quiz him - I'm not stupid!

Was just thinking about subtly asking the odd question when he's old enough, just out of curiosity.
