Does this sound like any Christian group you know about?

Please help!!!

I rather put my foot in it with another Mum and to avoid a repeat (and because I'm too embarassed to ask her directly) I'm wondering if anyone knows what Christian group this sounds like:
(1) doesn't celebrate Christmas or Easter;
(2) doesn't agree with the theory of evolution.

Sound like any group you know? Or maybe it could one of several million - I don't know!!

I don't think Jewish people celebrate Easter or Christmas either. The evolution thing varies a lot

Um Jewish people don't celebrate Christmas or Easter as they aren't Christian.

Oh, it's definitely Christian but I was baffled by the lack of celebrating Christmas and Easter. Do some groups not like celebrating such things? It could be JWs but I thought they might celebrate festivals?

JWs don't celebrate Christmas. Not sure about Easter, but it could well be the case.

i think there are other Christian groups apart from JW's which don't celebrate Christmas - know of one in NZ... (maybe be an international group but have only come across it there)

Could be JWs then, Idris. I don't know why I had Seventh Day Adventists in my head as I know nothing about them...........

Not sure how a Christian group could possible not celebrate the birth of Christ or the death of Christ. I wouldn't describe JWs as Christian either.
Evolution is a difficult one, as a scientist I can't argue that species have evolved over time but I do still believe Earth and everything in it was created by God (I know that might not make sense but it does to me)

how are jehovah's witnesses not christian? they believe christ was the son of god and use the same bible as other christians don't they?

they don't celebrate xmas because it was originally a pre-christian midwinter festival un-connected with christ (xmas trees and yules logs are both part of that older festival). since the same is true of easter, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't celebrate that either.

It could be Jehovah's Witnesses, but there are Christian groups with mainstream beliefs about Jesus Christ that don't celebrate Christmas or Easter either. I never used to. Still don't really celebrate Easter, actually.

Some Brethren don't, I think - Exclusive especially (they are not allowed telly, radios, have to cover up at all times, not cut their hair, wear hair veils etc....)

Could also be URC (Reformed Church)?

Oh, they definitely have TV, playstations etc so I don't think they are Plymouth (or Exclusive) Brethren. But they don't allow other children to come to their house nor do their children visit other people's houses. Obviously that could just be a quirk rather than a religious thing .

Is it possible that they dont celebrate the commercialized Easter and Christmas?? Some STRICT christians prefer to snub all the pressies, eggs etc

JW's do not celebrate Christmas and Easter or birthdays.....they do not use the same bible as Christians, and are not classed as Christian by any Christian group.

All Christian celebrate the birth and death of their saviour Jesus Christ.

Many Christians do not believe in the Darwinian theory of Evolution - as this stands in opposition to the idea that God created a perfect world - (and man did not evolve from apes)........there is alot of research (ie. scientfic research) which stands Creationism in good stead.......

They're not seen as a Christian group because they do not accept the Trinity as being one, they see it as three distinctly different beings. They believe Jesus was created by God and isn't God.

It does sound like a description of JW's but without more information there are a few groups that it could be.

As far as creation is concerned most Christians believe God created the earth. There is a lot of scientific evidence for it, which is not widely publicised. I never understood how anyone can believe in an all powerful, omnipotent, omnipresent God and not believe He is capable of commanding existence. If He is not powerful enough for that, then He is not the God I serve and not worth serving, obviously the world happened by accident whilst He wasn't looking.

I've never really understood why not. I know that it is suppressed by mainstream scientists who have problems with young world or creator theories because it calls into question everything they know and I suppose that there isn't enough Creation/ Christian scientists to be able to make the research widely known.

I'm told the recent Stephen Hawking series made bit of a mockery of his lifes work because he kept coming up with young world/ creation evidence. I've not seen it, but I will be looking for it.

Didn't mean to hijack the thread which isn't really about that, but the question was torn from me when I read that line.

If there were a shred of evidence it could be put up on the internet for all to see. Mainstream scientists couldn't suppress it.

And strangely most christions I encounter now have moved the goalposts and claim god created evolution since they can see they don't have a leg to stand on with the whole 7 days thing.

There is evidence out there, it's been awhile since I've gone looking for it but I know it's there. Mainstream science won't publish it and you are talking about a small group that will.

The Christians that move the goal posts haven't done much research of their own, even if it is reading someone elses work. I know some very intelligent Christians, some that are scientists, that hold firm to The Bible's version of events.

There are loads of websites out there if you google "evidence for creation" or "evidence for a young world". I'm surprised how many there are as there wasn't that many before when I looked.

Also, those Christians who move the goal posts are the ones I don't understand, who don't believe their God is powerful enough. They make me wonder why they bother following Him.

There is no scientific evidence to support Creationism - and I don't care if I am being intolerant or judgemental in saying that. Believe it if you want to - but don't pretend that there is any scientific evidence to back up your belief - there isn't.

TinkerbellesMum, thanks for the links. I'm reading them with interest since at least so far they are not the standard "how do I know - because the bible tells me so" line. First impression is that they appear to cast doubt on some timings without really proving they fit in the 7000 (6000?) years.

Of course if they succeed in showing that the earth could have got to where it is now using science to explain the process then that would be startling, but would not prove it was created. To prove it was created they'd have to show that it couldn't get to where it is now, but was nevertheless only several thousand years old.
