Well one explanation is that is is derived from God's Friday.

The other explanation is that it is good because it was on this day that Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice for our salvation.

found this don't know if there's any truth in it.

I always thought that it was because we were all saved by the sacrifice of Jesus, which would be a good thing. But it is probably something boringly etymological.

Dd1 has decided it's called Good Friday because on the cross, Jesus wiped out our sins 'for good'

I was answering the thread question in general flippant terms. Ignore.

well actually dd (7) and I were wondering yesterday why it is called Karfreitag in German. I don't know actually and can't be bothered googling to find out. So I said I don't know what this "Kar" Friday is supposed to mean but in English we call it Good Friday and thankfully she was satisfied with that!

oh ok thanks so now I know. Good to know "Kar" is an obsolete word. In fact they call the whole week "Karwoche" so week of mourning maybe, although that doesn't make much sense to me with Jesus being raised from the dead after 3 days so the mourning should be over then really.

I think Karwoche is Holy Week (the week leading up to Easter) not the week after.
