looking for a church in edinburgh

I'm thinking of finding a new church for me and ds. I'm not really sure what I'm looking for, just something slightly more liberal than the one I'm in at the moment.

South west or central edinburgh would be ideal, any ideas?

If you're willing to give the C of E a go, you could find your nearest church from
www.acny.org.uk

Some churches only have basic details, others have websites etc.

The Scottish equivalent of CofE is the Scottish Episcopal Church www.scotland.anglican.org/. From your other thread, I think you might well find they would suit you.

Just glanced back at the issues you mentioned before - women ministers - they have them, and in theory could have women bishops though none have been appointed yet (rules changed a couple of years back to allow it). Homosexuality - not a problem for church members, but possibly a problem for ministers in a same-sex relationship (though I have a feeling it's a "don't ask, don't tell" rule). Sex before marriage - not a problem. Position of scripture - important, but more of an emphasis on grace.

In case you haven't guessed, yes, this is my denomination ).

Thank you! will have a search. The church I go to at the moment is scottish episcopal, but call themselves interdenominational and are kind of charismatic, evangelical sort of thing. It was literally the first church I ever went to and just not for me I think.

does anyone know what the church of scotland is like?

I think it varies from church to church, in the same way as the C of E does...

AMumInScotland · 04/03/2008 09:15

Seriously beansmum?.... thinks hard about it... St T? Only one I can think of who take that kind of line... my brother went there for a while in his teens, and was very concerned the rest of the family were going to burn in hell...

Most Piskies aren't at all like that. St T have an odd history, and were separate for a long time.

I was brought up Church of Scotland - as MBS says, they do vary, and have probably changed from when I was a kid. But back then their motto could have been "God didn't put you here to enjoy yourself". But do try out your local one and see what it's like in reality, I've not been in one for years

beansmum · 04/03/2008 16:52

Not St T, don't want to say which one because someone will probably recognise me! But that sounds like one to cross off my list of possibilities.

I'm going to try the local Church of Scotland. Next week if I can work up the courage.

I haven't seen you for years, beansmum! I am very very far from being an expert on this, but I went to this church with dd in December (she was representing the school at a service) and everyone was completely lovely. I realise that doesn't begin to address any deeper issues, but they came across as fairly liberal and were lovely with the children. Might be worth a try, especially as it's on good bus routes?

beansmum · 04/03/2008 17:07

I haven't had internet access since leaving uni, got broadband last month. yay!

thanks, I'll have a closer look at their website when I have my brain switched on.

Did you stick your course out in the end? Nice to see you back, anyway!

MaryBS · 04/03/2008 20:10

Tamum - I looked at that website, and misread it - it reads a bit like the website is designed by Pilkington

beansmum · 04/03/2008 20:21

didn't graduate, left just before final exams, I was hating everything about it. Doing OU courses now, onto my 4th.
