I just had a 20 minute discussion on the doorstep with 2 Jehovah witnesses.......

and came away feeling quite proud of myself.

Basically, I believe what I believe, I don't fit into any peigeon hole of religion and we discussed this. I was able to answer all of her JV questions/quotes with a proper rational answer from my own "made up" LTH religion.

She thanked me for taking the time to talk to them (and for not shutting the door on them) and tbh it was quite a nice chat

Not sure why I'm telling you this, just thought I owuld.

Do non jehovah witnesses ever invite them in and chat over a cup of tea or is it the done thing to chat on the doorstep? Just wondering.

hmmmm, I'm not sure if I would actually invite them in. I think they'd feel they were "converting me" if I did that and I wouldn't want to mislead them.

Never invite them in myself. Think a baby on the hip helps to make it brief.

yes, i can see your point there. Sometimes, if I'm in the mood I like to chat to someone with different views but I physically can't stand for 20 mins without discomfort. A chair in the porch maybe....

They dont back off if you say you are Catholic. They are just pleased to find someone who has a belief in God when so many these dont believe in anything!

I made an appointment for two of them to come back and chat over a cup of tea. We came to a point when I asked them:-"Wouldn't you like to know that you are saved now?", and the man said (they were husband and wife):-"That would be lovely" and the wife said:- "That could never happen". They never came back.

They back off SOMETIMES if you say you're a Catholic. Because Catholics are beyond redemption .

I used to tell them that, but as I'm not one any more, I usually go for the "I'm a blood donor". Although they haven't been round for a while, so I could tell them next time that I'm a minister in training

We used to have a very fervent Christian lodging with DH and I. He invited them in once, we went out and left him to it. They stayed for 2 hours, and agreed to come back the next week. They came next time with reinforcements. The third time they came, they came mobhanded with several elders (about 6 JWs in total I think). After that our lodger used to hide from them as well .

They turned up one Sunday morning and I hid, and made DH answer the door. He was in dressing gown and hadn't had coffee yet! The JWs started spouting about how the laws of science were in fact theories. DH, being an engineer, didn't agree with this and offered to do an experiment with them. This was to climb to the attic, jump out of the window holding hands, and see if the laws of acceleration and gravity were in fact theories or laws. They didn't accept...but came back a month later. I was out in the car, so drove around the village, when I saw them in the drive way, whilst DH talked to them about 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance'. We didn't have a repeat after that!!

Oh crikey, I have them in for tea and biscuits. In fact I've got a number of good JW friends now. Very different views (seeing as I believe Jesus is Almighty God and all that) but they are just lovely, lovely people. They've done my ironing and hoovering on a few ocassions, too.

Just keep a give blood sticker in your front window, they don't knock then. That's what my Mum used to say anyway!
We have had 2 knocking around here recently and hubby opened the door and said 'religion?' they said 'yes..' and he shut the door. Sorry but don't think that people should be able to knock on the door to 'sell' religion.

They came around at my last house and they were really nice not pushy they explained what they believed that we would all have lived forever if it wasnt for eve (at least I think thats what they meant) and I have read the watch tower

to be honest I think its very interesting to find out about people religions and why they think like they do why they believe so feverently that something is right

I think my religion probably boarders more on the spiritualist side I seem to understand that more and only learned about that by someone stopping and telling me about it

I think two things have put my back up about JWs. When they turn up to proselytize they sometimes have children with them. I have no problem in being firm with an adult, and saying I'm not interested, and sometimes if this is not accepted and they get pushy, I can be a little pushy back. I don't like to do this in front of children.

Secondly, when DS had to go for a catheter test to see how big the hole in his heart was, we didn't know if he would need open heart surgery or not. My then supervisor (before me being a scary teacher)was a JW and brought in all kinds if literature about not having blood transfusions for DS, and kept talking to me about it at work. I felt, that as a fellow parent, he should have shut up, as I was very worried about the whole thing. I also got annoyed when he didn't celebrate birthdays, but was always willing to eat the cakes we brought in for ours!

What I also don't understand is if they believe that only 144,000 can be saved, then isn't that total already reached, so why bother with the rest of us?
