Could anyone please talk to me about Spiritualism?

Is there anyone here who attends a Spiritualist church?

If someone was thinking about visiting for the first time, who is genuinely interested in Spiritualism and tentatively considering following the religion, what should they know?

(Anglican background)

Thanks

hiya, not sure what is meant by a spiritualist Church? I'm a Sufi Muslim and spirituality is deeply embedded in our faith. personally I would think spirituality is central to all faiths? but I guess it depends on what you mean by spirituality?

I think OP means that kind of thing where you communicate with spirits

aah.... now that's something I know nothing about

Sorry I wasn't clear, I meant this sort of thing:

Yes I go to a Spiritualist church. You just need to go in with an open mind I think. The services follow roughly the same format each week: singing, prayers, healing, a talk and then the best part, the mediumship

Theres no pressure, I find it very calming and peaceful.

There's a fascinating podcast called Ghost Church by Jamie Loftus which investigates the origins in America and one of the current centres/churches. She is very even handed in her approach.

My Grandma was a spiritualist medium and my uncle a healer. They both found great comfort in their beliefs.

The best thing to do with any exploration of spirituality is to try it out.

is there anything that’s drawing you to a spiritualist church?

I went a few times and really liked it

There were definitely variations - one place didn't sing any religious songs, others did. I did assume the mediumship bit was staged tbh.

I attended a more traditional church and a couple of people from there also went to the spiritualist church sometimes.

I probably would have carried on but sadly it fell into the lockdown trap (there was a very full on Christian church who I think had secret meetups but while I like the vicar the others I know from there are deeply religious so that wasn't for me).

Worth trying it. Depends what you're looking for, I guess.

Hi OP, I've attended a few events through a Spiritualist Church, personally it wasn't for me. Their general belief resonated with me, but they don't do a whole lot if spiritual wisdom or teaching. It seems to be all about communicating with spirits and workshops for channeling, card readings, working with energy etc (which if you don't have a natural inclination for are a waste of money imo). This wouldn't be so bad, if they really could communicate with spirits. But the "mediums" I've observed there are mostly fakes or lying to themselves about their abilities, judging from the inaccuracy and vagueness of their readings. That's not to say there aren't genuine ones out there but just be prepared that the majority probably aren't.
