OK, feel very silly and ignorant. DS1 having his 6th birthday party next month. Is there anything I should be aware of, or stay away from/include especially for his Asian friends?

I don't want to start any heated debates, or sound un-PC, but although I have a very general knowledge of different religions, I don't know if there are any specific things that would make the party extra special for the Asian (mostly Indian) children, and I would be horrified to get it wrong.

Looking likely to be a bowling party, game of bowling, food is provided by them (probably along the lines of chips and burgers ). We live in a very multi-cutural town, and I can get hold of Indian sweets and treats, is it worth doing something like this?

Is there anything that should be avoided completely?

I will be the one cowering in the corner feeling very unknowlegable....

I wouldn't do anything different tbh. I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to by special sweets. Just treat all the kids the same. Make sure none are vegetarian though before ordering the burgers and chips.

I'd just let them play and have burger and chips, to be honest. Make sure there's a veggie option so that everyone's got something they can eat, and just let them be children and play.

You might find some don't eat beef/pork but as long as there is a veggie option this won't be a problem & they can decide for themselves. I wouldn't do anything else different.

OK thanks everyone.

I will double check they have a veggie option, though I am sure they will have, it is a nationwide bowling company.

I find it a bit sad that this is the first party that DS1 has been to where it hasn't just been either white children or Asian. It seems he and his best friend are the only children to play with both.

Don't put Haribos or other sweets that might have gelatine in the party bags. I think chocolate bars should be ok.

NatalieJane · 13/02/2008 13:03

The bowling place supplies the party bags, don't think I have any say what is in them...

Can you tell I haven't done this party thing before? And he is 6, 'tis shameful!
