Spaces for Christians to chat with each other …

Rickandmortified100 · 23/01/2023 10:36

… without being attacked and having threads de-railed by angry atheists who just want to argue about religion?

MN is good for a lot of things but I am always disappointed by the number of threads innocently started by a Christian wanting to chat with other Christians and instead just being bombarded by people just wanting to insult Christianity or tell people they’re stupid for their beliefs and so on. I was so excited when I found a religion board and had hoped to be able to chat about a lot of things but have just been put off starting threads because I know I’ll just end up feeling upset and frustrated when the hate starts.

Does anyone know any safe spaces online where Christians can chat and ask questions but where trolling/hate isn’t allowed? Of course differences of opinion are fine and different ideas should be tolerated but I’m just talking about anywhere that has restrictions against people coming on just to troll/argue/express hate/make sarcastic or upsetting comments/try to make people feel small and stupid for their religion.

Any ideas?

Sorry to ruin your joke @fireflown but I thought I’d made it clear that I was looking for recommendations of good sites that current users have experience on and know that they’re moderated and bullying/fights aren’t tolerated. Anyone can Google but I’m asking for personal recommendations of moderated sites and nice communities rather than a bit of an ‘anything goes free for all’ like these message boards!

And me? I'm actually in need of one too.

Faradalla · 24/01/2023 07:36

I'll send them on soon guys. It might be an idea to contact mumsnet about setting up an area just for Christians, if one doesn't already exist ( or those with an authentic curiosity to ask questions). There are plenty of spaces for atheists, agnostics and those of other faiths to discuss Christianity outside of the context of a supportive community for like-minded followers of Jesus who would like to grow in their faith.

There are lots of sub groups on mumsnet, such as Style and Beauty, Feminism, Scots net, Craicnet etc. I'd never go on the Pets Corner group and respond to a genuine question about an animal with 'I'd never get a pet because they shed their hair everywhere'. 😆 So it would be nice to have a dedicated forum.

Just an idea.

Vincitveritas · 24/01/2023 21:41

@Faradalla picklemewalnuts started a thread chat around exactly that but ironically it got hijacked by the haters!

TomPinch · 24/01/2023 22:12

Oops - I forgot the rule about not mentioning other discussion forums. <embarrassed>.

Yeah, I don't recommend having a dedicated MN thread either. I'm a relatively regular contributor on another thread that regularly gets invaded and derailed by people who it's not for but who Just Have to Have Their Say Because Reasons.

Vincitveritas · 24/01/2023 22:46

"Because reasons" LOL.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 24/01/2023 22:48

I'd love to know this too (can I have the link please @Faradalla )

I think the problem is that these threads end up in the active feed. And the haters get on it. I hate It when I post on another completely unrelated posts. And get attacked for my beliefs on those. I'm sure Mumsnet wouldn't allow any other religion to be attacked like that. It would count as hate. It seems Christianity is easy pickings.

I suppose if someone is on a Christian thread saying they’re Christian but then says things that don’t seem to align with Christianity on another thread, that could make people pick up on it.

You're probably right. But the haters should just scroll past.

I wouldn't go on a thread about Friends and tell people it's not funny and they are stupid for watching it. Or one about pets and tell them I don't like animals and they are weird for owning them.

People should give Christians/believers of any religion the same treatment.

@Faradalla I would like the link too if possible, thanks.

Faradalla · 26/01/2023 18:47

I've PMd everyone who asked. The website is a small, US based forum but I've used it for a few years and have always got great support. You can also sign up for a daily devotional email and it's always thought provoking.

Katherine1985 · 04/03/2023 11:18

@Faradalla the forum sounds great. Please could you send me a link too?

erinaceus · 04/03/2023 13:09

There used to be a “prayer and chat” thread, does that get derailed too? I’ve not posted on it in ages.

JanglyBeads · 04/03/2023 13:11

Still here, not detailed but quiet at present:

Christian prayer and chat thread Open to all http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/philosophyreligionn_spirituality/4197440-Christian-prayer-and-chat-thread-Open-to-all

JanglyBeads · 04/03/2023 13:11

*derailed

TwilightSilhouette · 05/03/2023 21:42

I use the Christian Chat and prayer threads too and generally find they are safe from haters. They go through phases of being active then quiet.
I never get too worried about the aggressive atheists who troll threads anyway - they can be so horrible, I think other posters quickly see their true colours and I am sure that as a result they have probably pointed more people towards Christianity than Nicky Gumbell!
