LENT - what are you hoping to give up?

I haven't decided yet! thought I'd go for something subtle this year like not trying not to get angry with the dds for 40 days ( some hops...)

I am taking up.....being aware of my temprement ( IRL..NOT here)and trying to be more plesant

I dont think its biblical, but it is a way devised by the church of devoting serious time to thinking about your faith.

I think the giving things up is interesting - in some ways physical things can be a distraction from the spiritual, so its good to give them up, but on the other hand, you can end up with the giving-up becoming an end in itself, especially if you are doing it to lose weight etc, taking your mind off deepening your faith.

So I think I am going to give up dairy, to have a simpler diet, and take up reading religous books, something I've never done, but I've been lent(!) several.

I think that Lent came from the contemplative desert fathers and as such is an amalgum of much older practices, but put into a modern, more workable framework.
I think its a great idea, and the private self denial is freeing.
Having said that -
DD2 is giving up "unnecessary"sweets (her words, allowing her to only have necessary ones) and im going stop sitting on my depressive arse.
DD1 hasnt said (probably lipgloss),Still she had the ashes yesterday,not today. So nothing is set in stone anymore.

i'm giving up my penchant for sweet puddingy treats, including chocolate, and especially anything shop-bought, late at night when i have a sugar craving
