Not everyone celebrates Christmas

Semi lighthearted but is anyone else exasperated and irritated by the assumption that you celebrate Christmas? If you were obviously from another culture it might be easier but otherwise the default is Christmas.

Nothing I do or say suggests this is the case but people persist. Eg in the supermarket today, getting some basics "Oh, hello Chimneys, doing your Christmas shopping?" Or "What are doing for Christmas?" Or "Finished your Christmas shopping yet?".

I know people are making conversation and I usually just smile and move on but it's as though an alternative viewpoint doesn't exist.

Our Muslim and Hindu staff (NHS) don't celebrate it as a religious festival but they do celebrate it as a thing ie buy gifts. Most British people don't celebrate it as a Christian festival either

Sorry, are you now peddling the old anti-semetic "Jewish deicide" trope as a justification for the persecution of Jewish people?

Yes. They are.

And that goes well beyond mere criticism of organized religion.

Well. This thread has been a terrific exhibition of MN antisemitism, now.

(Also, what I consider "respectful"? If I do say "I don't celebrate Christmas," which I don't say to a cashier in the supermarket because really, they're on autopilot, just don't argue with me about it. Really, that's all. No telling me about the Jews you've met who do celebrate, or why it's not really Christian, or how it's British culture.)

Here we go.

The report was for the obvious vitriol towards “Xmas” and “xtians” and continued enforcement of the X rather than bringing themselves to say “Christ”.

Very transparent. But of course, make it about you!

Are you going to report every post that uses the word Xmas? That might take a while.

Weepachu · 30/12/2022 11:12

Oh do give it a rest, dear.

Oh do give it a rest, dear.

What? It was just a question.

It was for your predecessor.

The one who pointed out your anti-semitism?

Resurrecting an oldish but interesting thread.

I'm British and not a fan of Christmas. I love having time off work though and make the most of it.

I live quite an isolated life and don't bother with decorations and spend Xmas on my own. Every year I get asked what I am doing for Christmas and I see people getting stressed about buying presents and having to cook Christmas dinner for people.

I'm going to start saying that I don't really do Christmas.
