Did anyone have this bible as a child?

I have just put this post in ‘What we’re reading’ and thought, oh this might be a better place to put it:

DS aged 11 is enjoying RE at school and we’ve been discussing bible stories, particularly the creation myths at the beginning. We aren’t religious so his knowledge of the bible is scant. He is very interested in it all.
I was taken to church as a child, was bought a bible and read it again and again, so my knowledge of the bible is good.
I want to get hold of a copy of this bible I had as a kid as they just don’t make them like that any more. They’re all rated U these days, whereas mine was more of a 12 certificate! I’ve looked on eBay but I can’t find it because I can’t remember the publisher.
It was:
Owned and read by me in the eighties
A4 sized and thickish
Had some of the more obscure Old Testament stories, eg. Shadrach, Mesach and Abednego in the fire (great illustration!)
Illustrated on every page - some almost full double-paged illustrations, eg the flood.
Illustrations highly detailed and realistic
Here’s the main clue - the illustrations were graphic, and I mean pretty violent, horrific and memorable. It didn’t shy away from the nasty bits and that’s particularly why I loved it.
Can anyone help me? I reckon if you had it and took a photo of one of the illustrations I would probably remember it.

I've been looking just this week for a copy of a bible that I had from age 5 until very recently. I found the book but it's a slightly later edition than mine was. Mine was Children's Illustrated Bible Studies Old and New Testament by Katherine McLean. It sounds very similar to OP's bible.

I had this one in the 70s. It was lavishly illustrated.
Nowadays the Jehovah’s Witnesses use a similar style…

@Nuffaluff can you tell us who did it?

VictoriaBun · 11/01/2023 22:18

Yes loved my illustrated bible. I remember the story of two women claiming a baby as theirs . And the parting of the Sea .

Iizzyb · 11/01/2023 22:19

Livingmagicallyagain · 11/01/2023 22:21

The picture of Jacob's ladder in the Children's Illustrated Bible was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen when I got that for Christmas in the mid/late 70s.

StellaOlivetti · 11/01/2023 22:27

I had that version too! There were a couple of pages I had to turn without looking at them. Wonderful illustrations.

UWhatNow · 11/01/2023 22:27

Love the Queen of Sheba procession too!

Shirtyllama · 11/01/2023 22:31

Was it the Jan Pienkowski one?

RedHouseWins · 11/01/2023 22:33

I had that! I loved it. Atheist now, but I still treasure it.

unsync · 11/01/2023 22:33

Does it start with Genesis?

MaydinEssex · 11/01/2023 22:33

My next door neighbour had that as a kid, I think she got it as a Christmas present. I remember when I started secondary school we were all given a Gideon Bible in RE

I still have mine, although I haven't read it for decades. It is in the loft somewhere.

gemloving · 11/01/2023 22:38

Mine has a children's bible. I'll check tomorrow and send over the ISIN. He's only 4 though but we started reading it together.

He loves all sorts of bible stories. He asked if the the baby in mummy's tummy will be baby jesus 🤣

Greatly · 11/01/2023 22:42

I had that one
Can't remember the illustrators name but pretty sure he was prolific in the 70s

NannyR · 11/01/2023 22:44

I had this one as a child in the eighties. It has some fairly gruesome illustrations, including John the Baptists head on a platter and one of the prophets looking absolutely terrified as a red hot coal touches his lips. I managed to find a second hand copy a few years ago after being reminded of it on a thread like this. Children's bibles these days are definitely more U rated!!

Swapshopped · 11/01/2023 22:44

Now that bible is a blast from the past! Will dig it out next time I’m at my parents!

Sgtmajormummy · 12/01/2023 06:56

We all got a Good News Bible when we left (C of E) Primary school. But that just had stick-men illustrations.

I think I had the same one - I definitely remember the picture of John the Baptist's head on the plate and the staring eyes. The cover was different on it though... blue, I think it was.
