I don't think it would be offensive to jews unless you had the name of g-d.

I'd also say that walking around with hebrew script can lay you open to anti-semitism

hebrew is also the language of another country . the jewish faith does not allow tattoos, also, many jews dislike them due to the fact jews were forcibly tattooed in the holocaust.

i am jewish, i don;t find it offensive, but a bit irrelevant, using another language that does not mean anything to you, to portray something so strong and personal to you

having the name christian in hebrew is a bit , dunno, odd to me.

up to you though, you are bound to offend someone on some level with a tattoo due to all sorts of connotations, so really it is your choice.

camillathechicken · 11/12/2007 12:13

x posted ! sorry !

Just thinking some languages do look more decorative than others (for one thing because you cannot actually read them so they are not decipherable to you). For me Hebrew looks like unfurling ribbons because I can't read it so I don't see the words just the shapes IYSWIM.

Not that it has much to do with anything... Camilla, are you Lulu of the haunted house? If so , I was wondering if the ghost had gone for good.

SSStollenzeit · 11/12/2007 12:28

ah just seen the answer to that on the haunted house thread! Oh dear

camillathechicken · 11/12/2007 12:29

yes and yes ! !

Blandmum · 11/12/2007 12:37

tattoos are prohibited in the orthodox tradition of judaism.

Not Jewish myself, but I think that makes it a little culturally insensitive to appropriate another culture and then 'misapply' it, IYSWIM, in particular the name Christian.

there are other historical reasons why a tattoo in hebrew might be seen as offensive
