Diwali - please tell me about it

We have kindly been invited to a Diwali party by our neighbours. We are new to the neighbourhood and don't know them at all but would like to take up their offer. Apart from being aware that it is the Hindu festival of lights I don't know a lot else about what to expect. Do we take gifts with us and if so what sort of things would you suggest. What about how we should dress - smart or not, bright perhaps??
Thanks for any input

I'm not a Hindu but from my Hindu friends I know that Diwali is hugely important so yes so dress up! The Indian girls and women will probably be in beautiful saris.

And yes do take a present - flowers and either Indian sweets / chocolates are good, but not alcoholic drinks as many Hindus don't drink (unless you know for sure that your friends do drink). Or a candle as it's the festival of lights.

Apologies to any Hindus if this is inaccurate!
