Did the devil hold up a mirror to God?

Can anyone help with this story I'm sure I was told at School as a child.

The devil and his fallen angels understood that if God saw his own reflection he would be destroyed. So the devil set out to bring a mirror up to heaven from hell but it shattered en route.

Ring any bells?

This has been bugging me for years.

The tale may have some roots in the old superstition that to break a mirror is bad luck

Well its not biblical but as the thread on the devil proved, most people have trouble separating the bible from paradise lost and the divine comedy. And possibly Lucifer on Netflix.

At one point someone said it was to do with Jehovah Witnesses but Hans Christian Andersen makes sense.
