Lent Ideas

What are you giving up for Lent? I'm looking for inspiration.

I thought about social media, but does this include MN? Maybe just Facebook?

Me too @ironicname

I usually do daylight fasting but I'm training for a sporting competition at the moment and need to manage my eating.

I'm a huge caffeine fiend so ...... how does caffeine sound?

ParkheadParadise · 25/02/2020 15:20

Chocolate

Thought about alcohol, told DH and he laughed his head off.

Chocolate it is.

Meadowland · 25/02/2020 16:57

@ParkheadParadise. That made me lol 😂
Watching with interest.
I'm thinking of not giving something up (as usually fail), but doing something like giving a compliment to at least 3 people every day.

ZenNudist · 25/02/2020 21:58

Im giving up cake and biscuits and mumsnet apart from the religion board!

ZenNudist · 25/02/2020 21:59

Also going to try to go to bed early (give up something negative/ take up something positive)

Sewingbea · 25/02/2020 22:04

I'm going to follow the 40 acts suggestions and reflections. 40acts.org.uk

SageRosemary · 25/02/2020 22:21

"Lent is what you do", do good, try anyway

ironicname · 26/02/2020 15:07

The 40 acts sound good.

I also like the idea of doing something good rather than giving something up.

I try to cover the three limbs of prayer, fasting and giving (it’s not as bad as it sounds!)

So I’m following #LiveLent for the daily reflections, I’ve given up Twitter (which is tricky because I keep pressing the app icon automatically and then remembering) and sweetneed things, and I’m also doing #40acts.

I also follow the approach of treating Sunday as a feast day (ie a day off!)

Toofaroutallmylife · 26/02/2020 16:10

Sweetened not sweetneed!

MargotMoon · 26/02/2020 16:21

Sugar! Only refined sugar though - cake, biscuits, choc, sweets etc. Not fruit or booze. Usually donate the money I've nominally saved to the food bank. I stick at it for Sundays as well, otherwise my sweet tooth kicks back in and it's harder - makes the Easter egg taste so much better!

Meadowland · 26/02/2020 21:32

Hope you all had a good first day of Lent. I think/hope(!) I made 3 people happier today by saying nice things about them.

Pipandmum · 26/02/2020 21:41

I give up alcohol in honor of my mother who was very devout (I'd don't go to mass at all) and always gave up alcohol for Lent. She enjoyed her wine so it really was a sacrifice! It's my birthday half way through and I've at times given myself that day 'off', other times I've stuck to it.
I was also toying with walking 10,000 steps every day and giving up sugar (I've done that once before, but I've already cracked today so guess I'm not doing it this time)!
In my youth some girls used to go to mass every day before school for lent.

Sewingbea · 26/02/2020 22:00

I've followed 40 acts today.

Mrsfrumble · 27/02/2020 14:48

I’m fasting between 9 and 5, and I’ve given up wine. I must confess that my motivation is not purely spiritual; I’m also hoping to shrink the podgy belly I’ve been sporting all winter!

Meadowland · 27/02/2020 17:59

@Mrsfrumble. That is amazing. I think I would eat my bodyweight in food at 5.05 pm..

speakout · 28/02/2020 19:56

Love it!! I admire the mental gymastics.!

Catinabeanbag · 28/02/2020 22:50

Given up sugar in tea. Normally take two. Not keen on the taste so far, but it's getting better. Trying to cut down on other sugar as well (less chocolate, biscuits etc).

Am doing the LiveLent reflections, and reading 'Saying Yes to Life', which is the Archbishop of Canterbury's Lent book for this year. My church is encouraging people to read / study it.

Gibble1 · 28/02/2020 22:58

I’m doing 16/8 fasting so only allowing myself to eat/ drink hot drinks with milk for 8 hours per day. Today I had my first coffee with milk at 11.21 so could eat until 19:21. But I finished work 3 hours late at 20:30 so I have missed my evening meal. Stomach is growling and I am trying to suppress the pangs with mint tea. Tomorrow will be hard as I won’t eat until lunchtime and am back at work for a really hectic day.
Lots of people at work can’t understand why any of us do anything for lent. Falls on deaf ears when we try to explain that it is a period of spiritual reflection- belief or no belief.
