Tell me about naming ceremonies

I was a Christian and had our dds baptised. I'm not now, but we would like to do something for ds so he has his 'day' plus sponsors/godparents to look after him. I know that our local council do naming ceremonies but they seem a bit -erm - municiple. Plus really I'd like a spiritual dimension to the service - I still believe in God. I definitely don't want to involve any churches.

Does anyone have any ideas? Tia!

Have a look at the bristish Humanits 9will get a link), I was just ike you- other babies baptised but lost faith etc. We ahd an officiant from them come out to help us organise a lovely ceremony in our agrden, which was tailored to our needs (and a joint 1st birthday event)

Will get link

here ya go

the officiant was very much up your street tbh, lots of quotes from Kahlil Gibran etc- a very intelligent, compassionate man.

Thanks, Peachy, will have a look later (am doing crafts with the dds.)

yep pg, have really bad mrning sickness (a history of hyperemesis) and as such couldn't lift myself off the sofa for a while and still only one one meal / drink a day at my best. Gradually upping my e-mail / mn time though so will get tehre LOL, and hopefully things will tail off in a few weeks >

Oh congratulations! Bummer about the morning sickness though, I only ever felt a bit like I was travel sick with my dcs and consider myself very fortunate. Will stick books in the spare room til I hear from you.

Am off to look at your link, I've just settled dd1 down as I got her out of bed to go and watch the bats outside.

We did both our dds naming ceremonies at home.Had Companions instead of god parents, invited close friends and family. Had readings and everyone signed a large picture mount that was framed around their photos. Lovely day for us all and great memories especially as my lovely Mum has since died.

That sounds really nice. I've had a look at the Humanist link and the problem is that I would want to bring God into it (in a woolly kind of way ) and I don't know if that would be fair on a humanist celebrant. Also of course there would be all the explaining to do - but then that will happen anyway as everyone will want to know why it's not a church think like the dds. Batey, did you have a celebrant? I've found a couple of companies on the net that offer bespoke services but I have no idea how good (or bad) they are and don't know anyone who has used one.

We had a humanist naming cermeony. I'd say talk to the person and ask them what they feel. It might be that you have someone else do a reading that could incorporate a spiritual element, perhaps??? I found the BHA to be great, and the ceremony they did for both our daughters was lovely.

HTH

Thank you, I will have a chat with dh. I don't want to spend the day fielding questions about whether I'm a humanist or not, or explaining why ds' day is different from the dds'. I did think of getting someone else to do any spiritual readings.
