I smell dead people in the long gallery (not kidding and not funny)

I posted about this previously and it went away but the floods seem to have disturbed something.

Basically I live in a 400 year old house (gorgeous see my profile pics) and work next door in a converted chapel (baptist - wasn't a chapel for long because the villagers turned up with flaming torches etc.) but there are human remains in the gardens (I know because I dug them up ).

A few months ago a funny smell kept appearing. Now it's appearing daily. We have checked out the obvious (dead animals in the roof, infestations, blocked drains etc). but the weird thing is, the smell only comes on in part of a room (various rooms) and seems to move and then it goes.

Today it moved up the stairs and to the long gallery and whenever I go in there it disappears within a few minutes (oh and before you ask no, I do not go around with a can of Febreze or indeed 'ghost away' spray.)

The building spooks me TBH and I don't like to go in there on my own. But I don't believe in ghosts and rationally I think all that stuff is rubbish.

So I need rational explanations please. We have ruled out:

(a) creatures in the roof - no airflow through unless they were in air con vent which we checked today
(b) Sewerage plumbing issues - all checked out and also smell often occurs in parts of the building with no plumbing
(c) Electrical issues - all wires checked - nothing burning/shorting - even cleaned the light bulbs to check it wasn't a dust issue.
(d) creatures in the walls - walls are three feet thick, solid ironstone
(e) creatures under the floors - parquet flooring over stone - apparently it's two foot thick.

Anybody got any ideas?

Aitch I still don't understand why you prefer the man shed to the luxury two bedroomed flat in the studio - is it the ghosties putting you off?

Aitch wants to move in and sleep with drummers apparently

Idobelieveinfairies - I should clarify - the man shed has a bedroom, a living room, a tool room and a sleeping loft (with a big picture window out to the night sky).

In the latter you can sleep with the stars without losing your morals

Got to say, the log cabin doesn't look the sort of place a ghost would be happy in. Looks too scandinavian. It's a commonly known fact that ghosts are put off by anything Swedish.

Men who bang things (I may be making this worse)

Ah yes, I do remember seeing the 'exorcism aids' section in the Ikea catalogue

Perhaps Aitch could watch from the log cabin for any shadows/figures that appear at the windows in the 'witching hour'!!

Umm no, there are no windows on the back of the studio. Actually you know, that's really odd now that I come to think of it. I wonder what was behind the studio that they didn't want windows there......

You know I got a real fright the other day, it was late at night and I looked out the conservatory (it was pitch black - there are not streetlights out here) and I saw this white faced woman in the garden. I was just about to scream when I saw she had an empty milk bottle and realised it was the old woman who lives across the road, she's a bit doddery, who had run out of milk and wanted some.

Seriously, now that scared the kecks off me.

Actually since I seem to have a number of 'believers' here tonight - I did want to ask something on this topic: I seem to know when people are seriously ill before they are diagnosed - also when people are pregnant - they look funny to me (or smell funny when pregnant). Is that normal? does everyone do this?

BBBee - I hope it is, because then it will go away, but it did start before the floods, but it vanished for a bit - mind you I wasn't around then so maybe no-one mentioned it. It's just started everyday, before it was intermittent. Which is why I did all those checks, thinking it was underground sewers or mice etc.

there are those dogs that can smell if people have cancer.

Do you have a really good sense of smell?

I think when Aitch arrives you should video camera the whole studio, we can see the reactions..whoever gets the question correct gets a free week staying in your man shed with an option of drummers!

rather than attributing the phenomenon to externals (dead people under floorboards etc) why not consider looking at internals? or in other words, having your nose checked out?
