New Wine Unite in Peterborough - is anyone going or been in the past?

NannyR · 01/07/2019 22:42

I've booked to go to New Wine in August, I'm quite excited but I've never been to anything like this before. I was wondering if anyone here has been before and has any useful tips or information. I'm camping and there's a couple of us going from church.
Thanks

I'm going, have been to New Wine every year for the past 10 years, more or less!

Am off to bed now but will reply properly tomorrow, or feel free to message me!

scrappydappydoo · 01/07/2019 22:49

Yep we’re doing week 1. It’ll all be a bit new for everyone as it’s the first year at Peterborough. It’s tempting to try and do everything- accept that you can’t- just pick and choose giving yourself downtime. Have you got dc?

NannyR · 01/07/2019 22:52

I'm going for week two. No kids, going solo (but with a few others from church).

You’ll have a great time in a couple of weeks they’ll publish a provisional timetable so you can see what’s going on.
It will seem really large and overwhelming at first but you will quickly acclimatise.
Try and get to venues early as some get really packed out particularly if there is a well known speaker
Take a battery powered fm radio so you listen to talks in the comfort of your tent if it all gets too much.
Take every opportunity for prayer - God changes lives :)

NannyR · 05/07/2019 20:19

Thanks everyone, the fm radio is a great idea!

I'm going for the first time.
The rest of my family have been before and love it. Just be prepared for all weather is my tip!

Madhairday · 09/07/2019 07:20

Yes! I'm at week 1, have been going for 22 years so I definitely think you'll love it :) it will be odd being in Peterborough though after being down in Somerset for so long.

Like pp I'd say don't let it overwhelm you. There is so much on offer and reading it all at once can be a bit scary! It's worth downloading the app before you go to get an idea of what's happening - it has the full timetable, all the seminars etc, so you can go through it slowly and think about what you might like to go to. Pace yourself - don't try and do every session in a day or you will burn out super quick! I like to go to the main morning session at 9.15 because it has the same speaker every day building on a subject so it's great. You have a choice of 4 different venues for the main sessions, all slightly different 'vibe' - the Arena is the main one, it's massive but I love it, thousands worshipping together - very powerful. Impact tends to be more 'magazine' style so it will have drama, interviews, daft games etc. It's great fun but also gets really deep into worship (they all have that focus really.) Still quite large but more like 2,000 than 8,000!! Then you have Hungry which is a bit more intimate, it's a lovely venue if you want something smaller. Then there's a new one called Presence, I think again it's a more intimate venue with prayer and worship at its centre. So there's loads of choice which is great so you can find the one that suits you best.

Then after the main morning Bible study they have seminars at 11am, 2pm and 3.30pm, then main evening session at 7ish and then after hours stuff like live music, comedy etc. I often pick just one seminar in a day as more than that just overloads me, sometimes I don't do any as I like to do lots of relaxing / drinking coffee / wine with friends in between the main sessions.

It's big - be prepared for how many people. 20,000 in week 1 this year. But the festival vibe is lovely.

Bring your own loo roll!

Are you in a tent or caravan? Either way bring extra blankets, camping can be chilly at night.

With food there is a supermarket near I think but we always try and bring the week's food with us as it can be a hassle to get off site. There are loads of food vans and a food court but not cheap.

Bring a reusable mug for coffee, you'll need lots of it Grin

We had a mini MN meet up last year which was lovely, so if anyone wants to do that shout!

Hope you all have a fantastic time. Grab it with both hands, it's an incredible week, but go easy on yourself too!!

scrappydappydoo · 09/07/2019 21:17

Oh I missed the mn meet up! I’m up for that this year Smile

NannyR · 09/07/2019 22:21

Great advice, thank you madhairday, I'm really looking forward to it now!
One question - can you take your car onto the campsite to unpack your camping gear or is it like a festival where you have to wheel it all in on a trolley? Just trying to decide which tent to take!
I'd be up for a meet up if any mnetters are going on week 2.

Madhairday · 09/07/2019 22:58

@NannyR yes you can take your car on on the first day to unload, they just ask that when you've unloaded and set up you go and park in the car park (unless you have a blue badge etc). So don't worry about packing or dragging stuff across fields!

Are you at week 1, scrappy? If so PM me and we can try and connect. I know nickelbabe is going too and there might be a few others who'd like to meet up if we get a minute!!

MaltedWheats · 13/07/2019 16:03

Hi everyone,

Our family is going for the first time. We are booked into silver 7 on week two.

I’m worried about the showering facilities. My DH and I both have arthritic conditions and aren’t the most flexible. Are the showers likely to be roomy enough to get changed or have a seat in them for changing?

Hope everyone has a wonderful and energising experience Smile

RubberTreePlant · 13/07/2019 16:05

Is it like Spring Harvest?

LouiseHumphreys81 · 13/07/2019 17:04

@maltedwheats the showers are portable showers in cabins, quite often there are benches but they are pretty small. There are larger disabled showers but I think you need to contact new wine in advance to get a key for them. I have always found new wine to be very helpful when I have phoned or emailed them, might be best to contact them and let them know what you need.

MaltedWheats · 13/07/2019 18:17

That’s very helpful. I’ve emailed New Wine about the key!

vivavivaviva · 14/07/2019 07:42

We're off to week 1!!

DH works for a Christian charity so is exhibiting in the marketplace, so we've only had to pay for the children. I haven't been for a few yrs, but used to work on team most summers. It's such a great event and we're really looking forward to it.

After all this wonderful weather though, I'm expecting rain!!

Madhairday · 14/07/2019 13:40

Good plan MaltedWheats, the showers can be a bit small though the ones in the blocks are better. Although have no idea what the ones in Peterborough are like, they might be better! I cheat and use the shower in our caravan, just get ds to fetch and carry water for me 😂
Vivaviva - we're at week 1 too. I'm getting really excited now. Hope we have some sunshine!

If any one going to week 1 wants to meet up, pm me and I'll try and organise it, there's me and scrappy so far :)

Hope you all have an amazing time. I always find that if really does rejuvenate and refresh me in faith, it feels like an incredible privilege as well to be able to meet together and worship together in this way, that was brought home to me last year when we listened to a speaker who had lived in N Korea and was imprisoned for her faith. It was an amazing and humbling talk.

Madhairday · 25/07/2019 23:09

It's looking like it'll be a nice week weather wise, though not as hot and a few showers.

How's the packing going?

I'm sooo excited 🙂😍

MaltedWheats · 28/07/2019 22:13

The wet and muddy pics on Twitter are concerning. We go next week and the forecast is awful.

Considering panic buying waterproofs Confused

vivavivaviva · 29/07/2019 10:24

I'll be honest, it's been hard work. Today is beautiful and feeling much more positive but the last few days have been difficult. Luckily our tent is standing and mainly flood free, but the kids are very low on clean clothes already.

There are lots of difficulties that they're coming across, silly things like cars are driving to the car park through the site constantly and kids have to cross the road. They haven't put enough safe paths down and many sites are flooded. There are only a couple of food vans, it's much smaller than usual.

Definitely definitely bring waterproofs and wellies, extras if you can. Be over prepared- we aren't and feel a little stupid!

MaltedWheats · 29/07/2019 21:13

Thank you vivavivaviva

I will take lots of extra clothes! I hope your week ends well. I’ve been praying for good weather, hopefully the rain might ease now.

DH and I are going next week with a group from Church. It will be my first time and I'm not sure what to expect. I have downloaded the app and have been getting notifications - but I don't find the information on the app very helpful in terms of what the sessions actually are about. MHD your post looks helpful, thank you.

I actually really need a break - life and work are crazily busy at the moment and I have some challenges in my life - I hope the week will give me time for reflection, rest and refreshment.

Madhairday · 02/08/2019 08:07

The weather has definitely improved. Week started out hard going with the rain and teething problems for the site, but the stewards are working so hard on everything and they're asking our feedback for next year. Kids groups are really not in a great location but they're taking that into account for next year.

But it's been amazing, I've had such a fantastic week, the worship is incredible and the teaching has been brilliant. Feeling knackered but refreshed, and very sad it's the last day 😭

Hope you have a lovely time. Bring extra bedding in case of leaks, and definitely wellies!! It's muddy....

vivavivaviva · 02/08/2019 10:57

I've had a wonderful week. Had to do more than I've wanted to, but only because I have a 2&4 yr old and husband working all the time. The kids groups are wonderful, aged 8+ children can be so independent here and as an adult you can do as much or as little as you want!

Programmes are £2 on the gate if you don't like the app. Play around with the filters on the app programme though and you should be able to work it out. Be in the arena at 7pm on the first night - should be a great intro!

Really hope you have a great time, and rest and relax too!

Madhairday · 03/08/2019 21:58

So glad you enjoyed it @vivavivaviva - was your DH on team then? I agree re the arena on the first night 😍

Were you in the arena on the last night? It was utterly brilliant, Miriam Swaffield was so fantastic and made me laugh a great deal, and I loved the closing worship/praise party. If you saw a middle aged woman in a turquoise dress dancing with little rhythm but lots of enthusiasm that was me 😂 I was taking the chance while I could, I'm chronically ill so haven't felt well enough to join in in a long time, it was so lovely. Paying for it now though 😭😭😭

I'm having NW withdrawal symptoms right now. Going to watch a lot of the live stream next week hopefully but will miss it so much.

Sorry we didn't manage an MN meet up - the week ran away with me. Really hope you all enjoyed it, and the week two-ers love it too.

Hello, we are back from our first time at New Wine. I’d been keen to go and persuaded the rest of the family (DH and kids 12, 15, 17) to come.
We were a bit overwhelmed for the first 2 days with the dreadful weather and the size of the site, but once I’d adjusted really enjoyed it. Spent most of the time in the Arena but had a good evening in Hungry and then Impact so if we go again would move round the venues.
Kids liked the freedom of the site, girls loved the worship, boy enjoyed the art workshops and the teen hangout (Pavilion).
Hope to return another year. We normally do Spring Harvest with friends, so this was odd being on our own, but overall a very positive experience.
